Southeast climates are really hot!
If you routinely buy your plants from box stores like Home Depot and Lowes, you may have purchased a plant of shrub with a full sun rating. Know that full sun in states like Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia, can vary extremely. This book teaches the importance of tree canopies in any garden environment in the south.A terrific selection of natives and unique exotics.

Great Book, Depending on Your Information Needs
This is either a Great book or an OK book, depending on your needs. The pictures and descriptions are GREAT! However, I was expecting more information on care of, pruning, dealing w/pests, etc. for the specific plants. There is not much information there. If you're identifying plants or planning companion plants for a pretty garden, this is very good but garden maintenance for the specific plants is minimal.

Must have for serious southern gardeners!
Well researched and written. Great advice on gardening in conditions unique to the southeast including summer high heat and humidity as well as mild winters and late spring freezes. Recommends more unusual plants that are not seen in every big box store but emphasizes that these plants have been thoroughly trialed in southern gardens. Mark has a wealth of experience in public gardens in the south, including his current position as director of the JCRA. His advice is applicable to both weekend gardeners as well as horticulture professionals. A great reference book that I will turn to again and again.
