This OTR Driver - Still likes it-So Far!
I'm a new owner to this brand and so I'm skeptical when it comes to portable refrigerator freezers that go in a big truck. My concerns are will they hold up to vibrations of driving over the road as many have troubled compressors that blink out as a result of vibrations. Many name brand units can be rather pricey but I try to go for one that has good ratings and hopefully it will last more than 2 years. 5 plus years would be super! Anyway, what brings me to this Whynter (Winter?) Brand was because my beloved Norcold 45 after 12 years of bliss no longer would refrigerate. It still works but, it freezes everything! I only want it to work as a refrigerator so here I am. Can't find my beloved Norcold anywhere on the market as they are either soldout from reputable places or folks are selling them at an outrageously jacked up price. So, when I found this unit, it checked off all the marks. The size is right for my space, it seems well built. It's actually taller and deeper than my old unit and I like that. It seems to cool down rather quickly to my set temperature of 36°. I have an inverter and it is running seamlessly on AC power without any issues. Mind you this is just day one but I'm writing this review to say that so far I like what this unit is giving me. It was priced very well and it is actually made very well and is working very well. I even bought the travel cover. It runs very quietly as I can barely hear when the compressor is running. The boxy shape doubles as a nice table actually. I plan to update after a month of using it and hope it will stay positive. I need to see how it handles after some vibrations of being over the road. Because it's built like a tank with all metal. I especially like the metal handles which are surprisingly comfortable when you're trying to carry it. It is heavy but manageable as I was able to get it into my truck but it was empty. Also the little lady who delivered it from Amazon had to walk upstairs with it in its big well packaged box and she managed without any issues so I definitely can't complain about it being too heavy. Although I don't plan to move it in and out, especially with food in it, so if that were the case I would be taking the food out before moving it. One slight drawback that I feel could be improved is actually where the controls are. Because they are located on the short end at the bottom of the right side, it would have been nicer to have them on the long end on the side where the unit opens and closes so that I can actually look back and see what the temperature readings are. So for extra measure, I have my thermometers placed inside the unit so that when I open the case I can actually see how cold the temperatures are inside. As I said before, I have it set the 36° but because heat rises and my thermometers are at the top they are registering at 40° so there's probably a plus or minus 4° on the temperatures. It's all fine with me as long as it stays under 42° which is in the safe refrigeration zone. Oh, and there is no way to change which way the top will open as it is fixed. So today I'm going to end with giving this a very glowing review and hope it stays that way as I will update this and let you know how things go after a month or so and hopefully after a year of using it. As it stands now for my first day of using, I would definitely recommend. It comes at a good price point, is well built, and it works well. UPDATE: Well, my update is coming about 3 months later..lol Good thing is that I can't report any problems. I did end up turning the unit so that I could always see the control panel and temperature. The lid is not reversible and so now the lid opens from the seat side or opposite my bunk. The temp inside has held steady as I switched it to the automic temp setting, which I believe works best. I believe the automatic setting keeps the compressor from working unnecessarily. I just plug into the DC outlet and go. I added a picture of the new positioning. Hope it continues to function without incident. I still would recommend.

Awesome freezer
Purchased July 2022 and used for 2-week off-grid camping trip. 45qt freezer worked amazing! Used AC power from generator during the day. Temp held steady 0 degrees - regardless of air temperature (ranged from 65 to 98 degrees F). Used DC power in vehicle, and from solar generator while camping at night. Have a Jackery 500; at 70 degree average overnight temps, only used 50% of battery over a 12-hour period. Seems to run a bit more efficiently in DC power mode. To conserve power while on our trip, we shut off all power for up to an hour twice a day; freezer only gained 15 degrees at temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees F. Food did not thaw, no frost build up - not even any water to drain at end of two weeks. We kept both AC and DC cords plugged in all the time; AC took precedent when this power was available. Only consideration; compressor does create a small amount of vibration. (VERY minimal - was only noticed by the (OCD) engineer in the family). We bought small rubber vibration isolation pads (for air compressors etc - $4 ea) and placed under freezer feet. This reduced vibration translation to the floor of our trailer, so now isn't even noticeable. Love the freezer - highly recommend - good product for cost, size, and function. We hope not to have to buy again, but would definitely do so.

Seems like some good engineering
Just got this. .. 45 qt... - was packed well and as usual Amazon got it rolling out the door promptly. Plugged it in and it worked. Cooled from 80 degrees to 45 degrees in probably 15 minutes. The fan is not noisy and it doesn't draw much power at all. I just got it, so could die tomorrow but the way it sounds I can tell they did their homework. Even the latch on the top door is great quality - has a spring action the puts tension on the lid to keep it somewhat down even before you latch. Smart. Only complaint is it came with a dent in the front of it that happened between the first box and second 'shipping' box at the factory. Ah, but so what, it's nice and seems to work great. Did the flash freeze, got down to -2 and stayed there. Outside didn't get cool so the insulation must be good. I'm a big solar guy, so when I go camping will run this off the sun + battery during the day and just a battery at night. I will post a pic showing it with a 1/2 gallon of milk inside, to give you some perspecitve.

High quality, very reliable, perfect size
My husband drives a truck and his company truck did not have a refrige in it. After a few weeks with an ice chest, he made the investment himself in this unit (buying the 65 qt first but it was too big for the space so returned it for the 45qt). This refrige is very reliable. Stays plugged in via12v all week, unplugged on weekends when he gets home. It cools down fast when he starts his week and maintains temperature setting perfectly all week. The unit cleans easy and the 45qt is sufficient for him to carry his meals for the week and daily drinks. He rotates drinks and new ones cool quickly. We are super pleased with this product! It also comes with an AC plug, but we only use it in his truck with12v plug. He has had it several months now with no issues. Update 2021. Compressor failed. Cost to repair more than replacement. Bought a slimline version for replacement plus the extended warranty. Product worked perfectly for 3 years. Still saved money over trickster food.

worth every penny finally ICE COLD beverages, food.buy it you'll be glad you did.
best investment i made in a long time.works great. i spend around $10.00 to $20.00 a week on ice being a over the road truck driver. thats $480 a year on ice and that's on the low end. paid for its self in a year. the electric Colman coolers are totally useless and a BIG waste of $120.on a 90 degree day your cooler is 50 degrees inside good buy to your food and hope you like hot pop. not this baby everything is ice cold or frozen if you want.goes down to -8 degrees, shuts off after reaching temp which is a big battery saver plus it shuts it's self off when your battery reaches at around 11 volts. so it doesn't kill your battery and leave you stranding like the electric Colman coolers will.heavy as hell but it has a compresser in it and it's SUPER QUIET can barely hear it running have to put your ear to it to hear it. plus with the additional purchase of the SquareTrade 3-Year Large Appliance Protection 3 years worry free it pays for shipping both ways for the cost of the warranty it's cheaper than the cost to ship it for repair. UPDATE: this one lasted 4 to 5 years before it died.the new one lasted 10 days shy of a year and you have to pay return shipping for repair and i'm guessing shipping to get it back. $165 shipping one way you do the math. no one near authorized to do warranty work. will be buying a engle or snomaster there crazy expensive but last forever. good luck you'll need it.

Amazing value for a solidly built, power saving fridge.
I bought this fridge in 2014 to use on my sailboat. 7 years later (2021) this thing is still working great despite several trips to burning man, getting knocked around in a sailboat, and being used as an auxiliary freezer on ac power at my house. Way cheaper than an Engel and just as good. It draws hardly any electricity- I don't understand how they do it! Fantastic product. It is a bit heavy, but hey- its a legit fridge/freezer so what do you expect? Next time I'll be getting the FM-65 to have fridge and freezer separately. A friend bought one 6 years ago and it's still going strong after continuous use.

Didn't Last 16 Months
This portable fridge didn't last 16 months. Purchased February 2022, done for by June 2023. When I contacted Whynter about having the unit repaired they said it would be $95 IF the unit could be repaired. Otherwise, they STILL charge you the $95 even though they didn't repair anything, and it's $340 for a replacement unit PLUS shipping both ways ($120+). That's $555. Seriously? Why would they ever repair anything if they can just charge you the repair fee anyway plus $340 for a replacement unit, and you pay shipping both ways. The shipping alone makes this option not worth it. -OR- They will give you a 40% off coupon which you may use ONLY at their "preferred retailer". Of course this "preferred retailer" offers a jacked up retail price ($616 vs. Amazon $595 list) PLUS a jacked up shipping price ($65 vs. Whynter's own offer of $60 with their "repair" option). So I took the coupon for 40% off, and when it was all said and done I saved a little over 9% off of Amazon retail price to get a replacement unit. I like the look and design of this fridge, and when it did work, it worked amazingly well. But if this next one doesn't last any longer I'll have to look at other options.

This Freezer is great and allows me to travel more easily
My friends were laughing at me..... I travel quite a bit and cannot fly. I need to take special food with me. I removed part of the back seat in my truck and mounted the Freezer there. I made a quick disconnect set up with bungy cords and it plugs into the trucks DC power. My laptop uses more power than this freezer. When I go to a hotel I pull it out of the truck, move it to the hotel room, and plug it in to the AC. Its quiet and the temperature regulation is accurate. My family and friends were laughing at me at first, now they want one and want my help to install it. I don't have time to go through that. I bought the extended warranty, which I never do. I also bought the jacket and if you are going to travel with it, you need that. This thing has been great and it allows me to stay on a special diet and go through my travels. One reason I mention this is that some people have to carry certain meds or have special diets and need to travel. I have attached a picture and it shows how it sits in my GM truck in the back. You can open the back door of the truck, raise the freezer lid, and get what you want. Quick, easy, and convenient. Maybe this will help someone. I also save a lot of money taking my own food and I prefer to eat and snack in a hotel room and not waste time in a restaurant where I might catch a nasty bug. It happens. A freezer is not a cooler. I keep this set at 0 deg F. Great product. 2016-11-08 As a follow up, I am still using this freezer. Several people got a real laugh that I travel with it,and then I started getting questions on how to set up the power and mount it in my Avalanche. Several people want to do this now. I guess I get the last laugh. This has been a great product and I would buy another one if needed.

Strong, good quality, highly recommended
Bought this back in 2020. Been using it on camping trips since then. It's amazing, good quality and built to last. Allows long term camping without food spoiling. Highly recommended if you're looking for something like this.

Valuable Camping Asset
Excellent, well made but expensive product. We have carried it across Canada from Ontario to BC this summer, as a freezer adjunct to the small fridge in our 13' Scamp trailer. The freezer kept our fresh fish frozen all the way and a large, dwindling tub of frozen yogurt in edible condition. This despite some nights when it was without any power. It works extremely well as a freezer when plugged into the travelling vehicle 12 volt DC socket, as well as on 120v AC. A fully charged deep cycle battery keeps it going for about 1.5 hours before dipping below 10v and the automatic shutoff point. We carry a small, 1kw Yamaha gasoline AC inverter/generator that runs the freezer on fast freeze mode to -8 F. Thereafter, the box is so well insulated that contents stay frozen until the morning.

Pretty good fridge for camping
Nice chest fridge/freezer, a bit on the heavy side, but robust and well made. There are two power inputs one for AC and one for 12v (or 24v) DC. There's an internal 120v to 12v transformer which would add a bit of weight to the unit and I'd have preferred they include an external power converter instead. The AC cord has a C13 plug on the end so you can use any old computer cable if you lose the included one. There are 3 cooling modes, Fast Freeze, Normal and low power mode. Normal mode would be good while driving with the engine running, however low power mode is what you'll want to use when running off a battery/power pack as the power draw is significantly reduced. In my testing (in eco mode) with the temperature set to 37°F (3°C) while camping I had a power draw of 15Ah (13volts) over a 24 hour period. The ambient temperature during this period was 83 (28°C) during the day and 64 (18°C) at night with a few openings of the lid for beer and at meal times. With the temperature set to 0°F (-17.7°C), the power draw over 24 hours was 39Ah without opening the lid at all. (This was on Eco mode as well)

Great quality and works as advertised..
I love this product....I am litterly on the road camping for 3 weeks and it's been hot outside...So far the 1st week the cooler has been keeping the 40f that I had adjusted it for and my batteries which I have 4 of them including solar to keep them charged are working great..only wish it had Celsius but getting used to ferenheight....

Do not buy! Broken after 15 months.
Fridge worked great for first 15 months. Overnight it has stopped cooling. Out of warranty period. After reading over other reviews of this and other whynter portable fridges it has come to my attention that this is a common theme. A massive waste of money. Spend the extra and get something reputable! I have reached out to Whynter for help - Will update review based on result.
