Yes, plastic is in contact with your water. And so is steam, which is hotter than the water and drips back down into your water. There are other dangerous toxins in plastics besides BPA, released in larger quantities by heat. A kettle made from Chinese-made materials can have contaminants as well - the Chinese are careless, have disregard for life, put money above health safety, and often don't abide by "specifications." Additionally, any screws, washers, solder, etc. can be made of materials that are even more dangerous than the steel. I have a Kit Aid whistling teakettle that is seamlessly coated with enamel on the inside, including any screws. I'm still waiting for a manufacturer to make a safe electric kettle that is seamless inside, preferably coated with enamel inside, unless made of 316L stainless steel. Often "rust spots" on Chinese steel are caused by inadequate cleaning of solder spray.
