Deep in the Egyptian desert, a band of explorers searching for long-lost treasure have accidentally unearthed and resurrected the Mummy—an ancient 3,000-year-old legacy of terror! Adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) pairs up with librarian Evelyn (Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz) and a motley archeological crew to conquer the curse of the living dead—the vengeful reincarnation of the Egyptian priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). Combining the thrills of a rousing adventure with the suspense of the legendary 1932 horror classic, The Mummy is a true nonstop action epic, filled with dazzling visual effects, top-notch talent and superb storytelling.

The Best DVD I Have Ever Seen
Whatever you think of the movie (and I loved it!) this DVD is the best I have seen (and I have about 100). It is packed to the brim with extras, including the best type of commentary by director and designer, and mini features on the making of the movie, special effects, and even web-page equivalents (although viewable through your DVD player and not requiring a computer) on Egyptology and Egyptian artefacts. I would recommend any electronics shop hoping to sell some DVD players invests in a copy of The Mummy because it shows how good the format can be when used to its full potential. Turning to the film, this was a loving re-creation of the 1930s Universal horror movie, yet updated to 1990s standards. In Arnold Vosloo the film has an effective monster, and comparisons with Karloff are unfair. Rachel Weisz is the sort of beautiful actress that appeals to both men and women for different reasons, and funnily enough, George Of The Jungle star Brendan Fraser shows that that film was just an embarrassing hiccup and that he does have talent after all. And of course, the girls love him! The beauty of the desert long shots is matched by the attention to detail in the CGI effects, which shows how effects can enhance a film without making it seem (Terminator II?) like a lot of effects strung together in a loose plot. The fighting skeletons are reminiscent of the best Ray Harryhausen stop-motion work, and it would be good to see more of them in the sequel! There's a lovely scene at the beginning of the movie where a whole room full of bookshelves is 'domino-toppled'. This seems predictable but this sort of corniness is excusable in that it introduces the characters and gives us a contrast with the later action. A lovely film made by a dedicated director and a talented cast, and probably the best DVD made to date.

Take that, Bembridge scholars
Well. Just re-watched this still-delightful romp from Stephen Somers and crew and I can say it holds up well. Just getting ready to celebrate its 20th Anniversary, so it is worth looking it its stamina. If you are one of those Digital SFX nerds then, well, never mind. The Digital SFX were great in 1999 and today look like crap. But, who cares? Good films are about story, character, acting and perhaps the visuals. And the visuals are actually pretty great, if a bit cheesy. Is it even important to re-cap the very, very simple plot? It is the plot of every Mummy movie: Europeans dig up a previously long-buried sarcophagus, and really, really bad stuff ensues. The main even there is the breezy, well-written script and the solid casting. On the one hand you have the swarthy Brendan Fraser at the height of his career (where is he now, BTW?) and on the other the Oscar-winning Rachel Weisz in a role she might have come to regret she ever took, early in her career. Its hard to imagine the same actress who played Ralph Fiennes dead wife in "The Constant Gardener" making cow eyes at Fraser, but, well, there you have it. This film is just plain fun, unless you don't like resurrected mummies turning to sand and blowing out of hotel room windows when cute little cats are held up to them And who doesn't.

It was a little brighter.
This was my first 4k bluray. Being one of my favorites, and being super cheap, I figured it would be a good test of my new 4k player/oled. It wasn't some huge leap, but you could notice. The main thing was the 4k was brighter, which I'm not sure is better.Still. Great movie. Great price. All time classic.

All Time Classic Movie!
This movie is amazing. CGI is cheesy - but that's representative of the early 2000s.Do yourself a favor and have a marathon of the trilogy!!
