How thick is the mat? (The main part not the edges) Also, how does it handle dog nails/cat claws?

It's quite thin - about 1mm - but fairly tough. I am not sure about the part of your question concerning claws because the size we had meant our dog's paws were not on the mat when she was eating.

How high are the raised edges please?

About half an inch - enough for stray cat's kibble but not a large dog's water bowl!
