Mont Marte Clay Varnish - 120ml - Gloss Varnish for Polymer and Air-Dry Clay - Colourless Glaze with Glossy Effect for Pottery

Bought this to varnish some clay chess pieces, I was worried about the bottle size as even when people say “a little goes a long way” I tend to overestimate how much I’ll need- I did maybe three coats on each piece (because I kept adding details with paint, not because the varnish needed it) and the bottle seems completely untouched. That’s obviously not a ton of use but it does definitely seem like it’ll last for a while. When varnishing small pieces, it gets on your fingers and remains tacky (which means you need to wash your hands a lot as unsticking your fingers from the next unvarnished piece can rip some paint off) but it’s touch-dry surprisingly quickly on the actual clay pieces. It peels off your hands like PVA glue under a bit of running water, but the shine it gives to pieces is a lot nicer than regular glue. My advice would be to rest things on greaseproof/parchment paper as when I left some pieces to dry on a random square of EVA foam the varnish stuck to the foam and ripped the paint off. the pieces feel more durable now, less so small points or spikes but things that have been added on with slip or just by smoothing edges feel extra glued-down with this. It smells kind of funky but not like the fishy smell you’d get from some kids glue. Overall would definitely recommend, especially as it’s hard to get poly varnish sprays where I am and this dries quick and gives a nice shine.

It's crazy how this makes any air-dry clay creation look like glazed ceramic! There's not much product in a bottle, but you don't need very much to coat an entire piece, so the value for money is good. I recommended applying it with some water to decrease the viscosity and any potential stickiness. I painted a trinket tray with some cheap acrylic and none of it has chipped off, whereas other creations I made without varnish are already flaking off paint. I feel comfortable putting hard necklaces and bracelets in the tray without worrying about chipping the paint thanks to the extra durability from the varnish. My only concern is that, with some paints, it might react or cause discoloration. I used a white paint which was a different (actually more expensive) brand to the other paints, and I noticed when applying that those areas became a little washed out. Thankfully it's not noticeable, but I suggest you do a patch test to see how the varnish interacts with your paints on a bit of scrap clay before you go in and paint your project. Lastly, the layers I applied dried within 30 minutes, even though the suggested drying time is longer. After the final coat I left it to dry overnight just to be sure, but I didn't personally notice any stickiness either between layers or the next day.

By far the best varnish for polymer clay that gives a resin coating like finish and is extremely glossy. I let it dry over night and it's fully dry by the morning. I highly recommend this product compared to other brands or cheaper products. I found that only one or two coats is necessary, but you'll not be disappointed with the overall finish.

I have just started dabbling with air dry clay and made a few little items. I wanted a good clear glossy finish varnish and had heard good things about the mont matte clay varnish. It was thick and self levels, did the job on the Minecraft creeper I made for my son. Dried with a lovely glossy finish. Just what I wanted.

Good varnish for my clay work... But stayed tacking to the touch for a week... It is worth the week wait... Very high gloss shine and only gave it the one coat

Works great but has really strong smell. Make sure to use it in a well ventilated area.

As someone who’s started clay making this has been very useful to use Quick to dry and offers a additional layer of protection would recommend for small projects Little bit goes a very long way

This stuff is the best! Adds such a nice gloss to any clay pieces and makes them look like they've actually been put through the glazing process.

It’s shiny and glossy, it has a bit of a smell but it’s non toxic so I don’t mind. It works good with the clay I use which is das clay, and it comes in a big bottle. It’s easy to apply with a brush just make sure to clean the brush with soap and water before it dries otherwise your brush may become unusable.
