An Epic Return to Krynn
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is a stunning adventure book that brings the world of Krynn to life in a way that both new and returning players can appreciate. The story is deeply immersive, set during the War of the Lance, and offers a perfect blend of high-stakes conflict, rich lore, and memorable characters. The book is masterfully designed, with detailed maps, engaging encounters, and plenty of opportunities for player creativity. The tone perfectly captures the epic feel of the Dragonlance setting, balancing the chaos of war with moments of personal heroism. As always, the artwork is phenomenal, adding depth and vibrancy to the narrative. The book arrived in excellent condition, with a high-quality binding and vibrant pages that enhance the overall experience. For fans of the Dragonlance series or anyone seeking a grand and dramatic D&D adventure, this book is an absolute must-have.

As the man said, this is a different battle in the War of the Lance!
This adventure (VERY VERY long OVERDUE!!! We had to wait through the 4e fiasco before WoTC finally published a new Dragonlance adventure!!!) tells the story of what happened to the City of Kalaman during the War of the Lance. The Red Dragonarmy, as we know, ran ramshod over much of Ansalon before they finally got to the small Township of Solace, where our familiar Heroes of the Lance began their fateful journey! However, this adventure is for a whole new group of heroes, the Defenders of Kalaman. In 1984, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis originally had players run one of the pre-gen characters. Here, players are asked to roll up their own, and several characters are added in, called "Side-Kicks." These are Squire of Solamnia Darrett Highwater, Cleric of Kiri-Jolith Hrigg Roundrook, Archer from the desert people, Ayik Ur, and a few others. To this, I added my NPC White Robe Wizard Alurian Kaladon, and resurrected the very beautiful (Chr 18!) Ranger, Shalindra. These are the characters I'm concentrating on when I'm writing the novelization of this epic! In running it, these NPCs take a back seat to my players: a young Squire of Solamnia named Henry, a Black Robe Sorceress Talavari, and a Kender Ranger named Alina. On the road to Volger, the characters met up, and came upon a horrifying sight: three dead Solamnic Knights, their bodies and belongings being fought over by four dragon-men creatures! Henry ran one through with his halberd, and fortunately tripped over a tree root, so the petrifying gas passed right over his prone form! (See? Sometimes it pays to roll a "1!") Meanwhile, Talavari tried to cast a Sleep spell on the draconians, only to learn that they are magic resistant! (A trait I deliberately held over from 2e. She's not in the Mages of High Sorcery...yet!) If you're a Dragonlance fan, and a DM, I suggest you buy this campaign! Have fun!

TLDR Light on Lore, Light on gold, and Timing Issues.
Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen Review 4 out 5 stars TLDR Light on Lore, Light on gold, and Timing Issues. Don’t run this as an Adventure League Campaign. A lot of the classes and races which are Adventure League legal conflict with the lore of the campaign. And the duplicating magic items will be an issue. Read or scan the book before playing as somethings appear out nowhere with little or no foreshadowing. Especially some villains. The Lore is limited to the introduction and Chapter 1. Chapter 1 also includes the feats and kender race. I do love the changes to the Kender race as it has the happy thieves which were the default in other editions. However, the lore is a thumbnail sketch of Krynn. Read ahead and take notes inside the various chapters. Information like names, motivations, and other needed details are not all in one place in the chapter. What is interesting and cool is the Fray Encounters. You can either buy the associated game which goes with the battle encounter or do the in book Fray. The Fray limits the battlefield and has interesting things happening along the border of the main action. The sidekicks are interesting but one of my players did mention that they don’t follow normal sidekick rules. Timing is an issue as sometimes it appears the distance is covered by foot and others by hoof. So be aware of this and make adjustments to the story to fit your time sense. Chapter 7 has some problems. It reads like director and scene directions instead of encounters. Once you make to the death star um main citadel, there are lots of encounters but story wise not much chance of a long rest once the main triggered is pulled. I ran this over 7 months and 19 sessions. My players pulled stuff from the net like a What is in the Kender Bags and other lore stuff which help with game play. It is a good value for your money if you love Dragonlance and D&D.

Dragonlance comes to 5e D&D and it doesn't disappoint
As a long time player/DM of D&D, but only a relatively recent convert to 5e, and a big Dragonlance fan, I was concerned that this wouldn't do the setting justice as it is ported over to the ruleset. After I uhhmmed and aahhed for a while, I took the plunge and I'm glad my fears were unfounded. It's a great introduction to the world of Krynn, and as an adventure it will take your players from 1st to 10th level. Set in the time of The War of the Lance, the players approach the main events of the story arc from a different angle to those presented in the novels. The book can also be used in conjunction with the Warriors Of Krynn tabletop battle game, which gives the feeling of being involved in large scale engagements that are more than just the run of the mill dungeon delving. If, however, you don't have the Warriors of Krynn game, provision is made in such a way that the players feel they are still being swept up in a continent spanning war. No familiarity with the world of Dragonlance is required as all the information you need is provided within the book - a potted history (including pronunciation of place and character names), unique races (Kender), classes (Solamnic Knights and Mages of High Sorcery) and monsters (Draconians) and significant non-player characters are all wrapped around a story that will keep your players interested and engaged for many sessions. Also, in the back of the book are a couple of beautifully illustrated, large, full colour maps which can be used as player aids during sessions as well. My first read through was intriguing and fun, and as I went through, I saw potential twists and turns that could be employed to make the adventure even grander and more exciting than it already is. Whilst the campaign is fairly linear (although the middle section does allow for exploration in any order), there are side hooks for the dungeon master to expand upon should they want to bulk out the campaign further. My only gripe is that I would have liked this to EITHER be an adventure OR a sourcebook, and this sits somewhere in between. It is primarily an adventure with some additional background information, so if you want details on the geography, society, politics and such of Ansalon (the continent on which most Dragonlance adventures and almost all of the novels are set), for your own adventures, you will need to look elsewhere. It's good as a primer but if you really want to go down the Dragonlance rabbit hole, you'll need to look to the Internet or some of the older sourcebooks from earlier rules editions to fill out the world information. It's a small complaint though and I am very pleased with the book overall and can't wait to run it for my players.
