Douglas A4 Skyhawk: 1955-2015 (Planes and Pilots)

As a former Navy pilot with over 600 hours flying Scooters I was disappointed with typos and inaccuracies in this book. The primary descriptive text is only 13 pages long and a lot of that space is consumed by photographs. Still there are 4 typos and/or inaccuracies committed in those 13 pages. Just to make sure my memory was still intact I checked my other reference material before writing this review. On page 4, 2nd column, 1st paragraph "JG5-W-4" should read "J65-W-4". On page 5 1st paragraph "Bullpup ground to air missile" should read "Bullpup air to ground missile". On page 6, 2nd column, 3rd paragraph "spoilers in the wings to increase lift during take off" should read "spoilers in the wings to decrease lift on landing to improve crosswind performance". On page 7, 2nd column, first paragraph the reason for the "cranked" refueling probe is inaccurate. Yes the A-4M's "Target Identification and Acquisition System (TIAS) was sensitive to metal in its line of vision and the "cranked refueling probe alleviated that issue. However, the "cranked refueling probe was introduced on the A-4E/F & G models prior to the introduction of the A-4M. The primary reason for the "cranked" refueling probe was to prevent fuel leaks during air-to-air refueling from entering the starboard air intake and causing a flame-out. The valve on the end of the probe had been a problem since its inception and was never truly fixed. The rest of the 119 pages covers every unit/squadron that flew the A-4. I can't speak for most of them But I did serve with VC-7 described on page 72. The Utility Squadron Seven (VU-7) "TallyHOers" was stationed at NAAS Brown Field near the Mexican border. In the early to mid '60s the squadron was moved to NAS Miramar and re-designated Composite Squadron Seven (VC-7). It was at that time that the then Squadron Commander changed the name to "Redtails". I have no personal knowledge of the foreign users of the A-4. The photographs and color plates are of high quality and seem to be accurate depictions of the aircraft described.

I'm happy with this book which illustrates colored side view of the single and two seat skyhawks and a condense history of different squadron's.This book should be helpful to modelers no top and bottom views.If a viewer expecting Technical Spec's. maybe disappointed.

This is one of the most thorough and complete books in providing ample color profiles for all U.S. Navy, Marine, and foreign squadrons. Well worth the money.

I'm not so much writing a review but I am commenting on the asking price for this book. The publication date leads me to believe that an english edition is in our near future, if not, I can't see anyone having realistic expectations about paying 999.00 for this or another mass market book. This series of books never disappoints, but anything over 35.00 is way too much.

I have a large number of these titles and none have disappointed; this has been an eye opener for obtaining so many operators & schemes in the one place at a very reasonable price. Love it to bits.

Wie alle der mittlerweile mehr als 20 "Planes & Pilots" Bücher handelt es sich hierbei um ein Softcover im B5-Format, und einmal mehr widmen sich die Autoren einem Flugzeugtyp bzw. einer -familie, um sie in den Farben aller ihrer historischen Nutzer darzustellen. Ferner gibt es einige Hintergrundinfos zur Entwicklung des Types und seiner Varianten allgemein sowie zu den gezeigten Flugzeug-Profilen, etwa, wenn ein Flugzeug von Land zu Land weitergegeben wurde oder es in seiner Karriere besondere Updates gab.Dieses Buch widmet sich der Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, die, neben den USA durch Navy und Marines, in zahlreichen Ländern überall auf der Welt Verwendung fand und sogar heute noch (Brasilianische Marine) im Einsatz ist - eine aktive Karriere von 60 Jahren!Inhaltlich liegt der Schwerpunkt auf Seiten-Profilen historischer Maschinen aus allen Epochen. Hierfür gibt es zahlreiche Illustrationen, die insgesamt einen sehr guten und primär anregenden Überblick über die Vielfalt von Nutzerländern, Anstrichen und Varianten gibt. Ein paar Real-Life-Photos ergänzen diese Profile.Alleine, diese Darbietung birgt zwei große Mankos, die quasi alle Bücher der Reihe betreffen: es gibt in der Regel nur eine Backbord-Ansicht. Das ist "um es gezeigt zu haben" O.K., wer aber als Modellbauer solch ein Flugzeug nachbauen möchte, muss sich woanders weitere Ansichten besorgen. Dort sollte man dann auch checken, welche Farbtöne die richtigen sein könnten. Leider fehlen in diesem Band Farbangaben (wie etwa Federal-Standard-Töne) völlig, und die Druckfarben weichen z. T. deutlich von diesen ab, bzw. vom realen Eindruck, wenn man mal Fotos der Vorbilder heranzieht. Dies wird besonders bei modernen Low-Viz-Anstrichen deutlich sowie bei den zahlreichen Aggressor-Anstrichen der US Navy.Ferner hat es der Verlag auch bei dieser englischen Variante nicht geschafft, ein ernsthaftes Lektorat durchzuführen. Z. T. scheint es, als ob französische Originaltexte gescannt und mindestens teilautomatisch übersetzt wurden. Anders kann ich mir z. B. Zeichenfehler wie eine "8" statt eines "B" hie und da nicht erklären? Zusätzlich gibt es (auch in diesem Band) einige Zuordnungsfehler von Texten zu Illustrationen. Das wirkt leider schlampig, weil eigentlich einfach vermeidbar.Insofern ginge sicherlich mehr, für den Preis geht das Buch aber noch in Ordnung. Es bietet einen kompakten Überblick und Modellbauern zahlreiche Anregungen, die aber definitiv mit weiterem Material erschlossen werden müssen, wenn man was halbwegs Realistisches basteln will.Aufgrund der Qualitätsmankos und einiger Redundanzen (die Betreiberhistorie wird in der Einleitung behandelt, aber in jedem Unterkapitel, die jeweils eine Luftwaffe umfassen, nahezu 1:1 wiederholt...?) gebe ich dem Buch drei Sterne. Dennoch, und wenn man nicht zu viel Tiefe erwartet, wie bei den anderen Bücher der Serie, durchaus zu empfehlen.

Discreto, niente di più. Molti profili sul mitico Scooter ma non particolarmente accurati. Le info in alcuni casi non sono corrette così come i numeri di matricola di alcuni esemplari illustrati. Una nuova aggiunta a questa serie (sicuramente non tra le migliori del genere) comunque da conservare nella propria collezione.
