August takes you through all the steps with clear instructions and helpful pointers from someone who has fallen into the inevitable traps that crosshatching holds in store for the novice. Not only does she show you what to do and what not to do, she also explains why and how techniques work or don’t. Drawing on work from famous artists, she also demonstrates the many approaches one can take to master this artform. This will be a prized possession in the collection for many years.

Easy and clear learning process. No fluff, just the right amount of information and so easy to read. I enjoy her writing style. Really makes this technique feel achievable. I’ve been following her on Instagram for ages and so happy to finally have this book. Would recommend!

This is not the typical pen and ink instruction book, but rather a broad overview of the use of crosshatching in art and illustration. The author manages to dispense a fair amount of wisdom in addition to historical information on the use of crosshatching. I particularly appreciated the quick overview of printing methods and how they influenced artistic styles.She does not lay out formal exercises for pen control or for different types of hatching, but she does provide a ton of examples and several pages on how to diagnose mistakes. There are plenty of high quality examples throughout the work, including several tutorials that use a variety of subjects (still life, etc).The quality of the images in the book is fine enough that you can see individual strokes on the examples, including Durer and other past masters. The book is also well written. All in all, a must-have for illustrators.

Comprei esse livro mais como uma forma de apoiar o trabalho da autora, que é uma artista incrível que eu admiro muito. Mas não deixa de ser um bom livro. Explica bem os matérias e métodos utilizados pela artista para alcançar esse estilo tão único e charmoso de arte-final. Um alerta: esse livro trata de arte-final e renderização, então, na minha opinião, NÃO é indicado para iniciantes. Você ainda precisa assimilar vários conceitos importantes antes de aplicar o que é ensinado aqui, como formas básicas, desenho de observação, valor... Seria extremamente frustrante para um iniciante estudar esse livro porque os resultados simplesmente não ficariam parecidos com as gravuras do livro, principalmente os retratos e desenhos da figura humana, em geral.

A very good guide, high quality print, pleasant to browse and fill the paper in your hands, full of useful advices and cool tips. I really like this kind of approaching to drawing and hatching. Not to be missed!

Perfect for learning crosshatching or just to look at some different approaches, thank god we finally have this book!
