Question 1

I can't get mine to stop filling up.  it just overfills even though i've adjusted it multiple times.  what should i do to get it to work correctly?

Adjustment is accomplished by varying the spring pressure via the knurled brass adjustment knobs. With bowl off, tighten spring pressure until no water flows, then slowly reduce tension on spring until you achieve desired water level. If this doesn't work, the Schrader valve inside the stem of the unit may need to be replaced. A Schrader valve is the one-way valve in your car tires that lets you inflate tires when the stem is depressed by an air hose. The valve can be easily removed with a valve stem removal tool and a new one should be readily available at any auto or tire store.

If you are referring to the small valve in the bottom of the brass stem that controls the water flow, you can buy these at any auto parts store, or at Walmart in the auto or bicycle department. They are Schrader valves, and usually come with a small tool to remove the old stem and install the new one. They just screw in and out.
I  have found that these wear out over time, or the tip gets bent, especially by ducks who use water constantly. The brass part has proven very durable. Just brush it all out while you have it apart.

can this be screwed onto a hose?

Not directly, it is female IPT (iron pipe thread).  Would have to adapt up to 3/4" hose thread.  The adaptor they show will do the job.  I attached to a section of pipe for stability and used the pipe to secure it to my fence.  PVC could be used, but I used galvanized for longer life and rigidity.

Can this be hooked up to a gravity feed 5 gallon bucket hung above the cages?
