whats the difference between this Artisan and the Artisan Black?

About Artisan: black: It's a bit rougher around the edges and the base notes have been beefed up with the addition of leather, iris and vetiver along with some of the other notes making it dark and spicy . This gives it that "black" title which is to say, in the world of marketable scents it's slightly Animalic yet socialble. A note about the scent: I've heard that for some people the blend doesn't work well on their skin. for me it shows up as leather, citrus and spice for others it might mix with their skins chemistry and become slightly "cat pee-ish" though the chances of that are random for the most part. It's a good scent and in my opinion more geared towards being in large groups aka: it requires warmth to get the best results. This scent will get you noticed and will get you compliments. So with all that said I would try to get a sample of it so as to make sure you are not one of the few people that have that issue with the scent not blending correctly with your chemistry.About JV Artisan: Take what I said about potential for cat pee and leather and darker and scratch that the original artisan is like the cleaner and more simplistic of the two blends, it works well on generally everybody and has a very prominent floral note on my skin(the greek lavandin).Notes: For this scent I have heard of some people saying it's "generic" but I didn't think so, on the other hand I happen to think where as it smells good in general and is almost perfect it could be a little too perfect causing it to have a synthetic quality to it owing to its base notes of kephalis and georgywood and other components. In all it is good but it is also carries a synthetic nature. I wear it primarily summer/fall the only problem others and myself have had with the artisan series is that "it's there and gone in the course of a few hours" again get a sample and see if it works for you. But if you're looking for a "black" scent that behaves well and is predictable get Armani code: black, it's generally pricier, other wise either of these two fragrances are nice and are nicely priced for what they offer. I tink the division to the two of these scents is: are you looking for ,morning to mid day? or afternoon to night time?

It's been a while since I've smelled the original John Varvatos, but I know Artisan has hints of citrus. It's very casual and perfect for summer.

I have used John Varvatos for years. How can I be certain that your product is 100% authentic and not some knock-off or watered down version?

The one I got from them was original came with the nice box and the lotion or aftershave. Good quality.

My favorite cologne

My go to. It smells amazing. The smell stays with you for a long time. The bottle looks great. It’s not too strong and I wear it to work or just out to dinner. It’s good for all occasions. It smells like it’s worth more than you pay for it and I’ve never had a complaint about it not smelling good. It’s very wearable.

WOW.....Now, I "AM" Impressed!!!

Simply put....I love this stuff. Like a lot of other men I avoid the "young mans'" chemically altered "ode-de-garbage-can" spray they are selling now-a-days endorsed by the latest rapper or hip-hop idiot getting busted for drugs and or felony assault with a gun...and wanted something I could call my own. I've tried sooooo many other colognes that my senses were overloaded, and my head was beginning to swim. I eventually came across a sample of Varvatos and WOW!!! Now this is what a real man should smell like. Some of the Previous reviewers complained that it wore off quickly... I found that this cologne (( Like every other mans cologne )) has many layers of scent in the proverbial-mix, and over time; 5- Hours or so , some of the lighter, sweeter scents started to peel off and leave the warmer, deeper tones firmely in place. Solution: squirt some more on! All in all: "Money is Tight-Now-A-Days, But This is Money Well Spent! " But be cautioned though... it took soooo loooong to arrive here in Arizona from the state of Florida I could have rode a bicycle myself and got it here quicker!!!

This is a great unisex cologne

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the scent doesn't last as long as most of my other scents last that cost about the same. The smell is very fresh though and not overpowering.

Stay Clear Of This One!

My wife bought this for me for my birthday. It smells pretty good, but doesn't last an hour. To test it, I sprayed two sprays directly on to my wrists and body. 30 minutes later I asked my wife if she could smell it at all. She couldn't. This is probably an imitation, as I couldn't imagine anyone getting $120 per bottle, enjoying an apparently good reputation, and being this bad. Stay clear of this one! It's crap...
