Veep: Season 1

Adult comedy that skewers D.C. politicos
If you awake one day and suddenly find yourself in need of a primer in conversational profanity, look no further than Season 1 of “VEEP”. In this vehicle for “Seinfeld” alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus she plays failed Presidential candidate Selina Meyers who’s stuck with the thankless #2 job. The show’s kind of like “House of Cards” in its cynical portrayal of Washington politics minus the sex, murder, plotting, and scheming but with a comedic twist. Louis-Dreyfus is excellent and has matured since her days playing Elaine and looks terrific. The mostly unknown supporting cast does a fine job portraying a team of sycophants. The stories involve watching the staff groveling for their high maintenance boss as she’s ignored by the POTUS while still trying to make a difference and gain some respect. The writing is good and there are many funny moments watching these dysfunctionals try to govern our nation. Back to the language; having spent four years of my military career in the Army where obscenity is the lingua franca of the service I personally don’t find this show offensive. I guess in politics, like the Army if you don’t punctuate every utterance with the “F-word” you’re just not taken seriously if we’re to believe this show. It’s not as bad as “Deadwood” but many will have their sensitivities challenged. Despite this I recommend VEEP for an snarky take on life inside the beltway.

"I can feel my soul..."
I kinda discounted the people who told me this was good. Mainly because after watching a couple episodes of The New Adventures of Old Christine, I didn't think JLD had any range as an actress. I was picturing a ditzy woman dropping F bombs and a cast of clowns, especially since I knew The Motherlover from Arrested Development was in this..The entire cast is excellent-- I particularly like the toned down Buster Bluth and Anna Chlumsky. And I think JLD is very believable as the Veep Selina Meyer. She has the self awareness of Sarah Palin and the personal warmth and empathy of Hillary. I have no issue with the profanity, which seems to be the number one reason people give for hating Veep. Actually, without the over the top vulgarity, you wouldn't even know this was a satire. The profanity illustrates how those in power conduct themselves with impunity. If I was involved in politics, I'm sure I could relate to Selina Meyer's comment, "I feel my soul sliding out my a--".Isn't that a great line? "No! It's vulgar and I won't stand for it. One Star!! Now, Jim Gaffigan and Last Man Standing. Those are funny shows!" This is my favorite kind of humor, and I really wish Amazon would have picked up The Onion because so few shows have the right balance of crudeness, irreverence, and intelligence. 4+ stars.

Not sure what I think but my two dogs absolutely love it!
We have two dogs, one named Olive and one named Magic. We will sometimes call our dog Magic, Black Magic because he's a black dog. Both of our dogs are anxious and we have tried for over a year to find a way to distract Olive and Magic when we leave the house for extended periods of time. Up until recently, when we left the house even for a short time, we would receive many complaints from the neighbors about strange noises coming from our house. Our dogs would get so anxious that they would bark, whine, and run around the house making small tapping sounds on the floor. This bothered our neighbors and frustrated us because we would be out having fun and receive a nasty, threatening message forcing us to come home and ruin a fun afternoon or evening out and about. Thankfully, we have found our solution. Veep: Season 1. The comedic antics of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as vice president of the United States thoroughly captivate and engage our dogs attention. While previously they would run around wild being obnoxious, they are now completely engaged in the television. And, thankfully, because we turn Veep: Season 1 on the smart television it plays the first six episodes guaranteeing us at least 5 hours of worry-free time away from home. As for the program itself, I have only seen the first 10-15 minutes but I have seen it everyday for the past few months. From what I've seen, it looks funny and unique. I haven't seen enough to rate it myself but my dogs have never been more well behaved so for that I give it 5 stars.

it's one of the best political comedies I've ever seen
I'd give an extra half star if it was possible. The show starts out trying to get its legs while it's doing some character development. You can tell that they didn't have the chemistry on screen down pat until 2 or 3 episodes in. Once they got going.... it's one of the best political comedies I've ever seen. After (what I felt was) a disappointing run on "Old Chrisitne" Julia Louis-Dreyfus gets back to doing the comedic acting she did best on Seinfeld. The running joke of "did the president call?" just gets funnier each time it's strung into an episode. I truly enjoyed "The Thick of it" which is the British show that "Veep" was based off of. Not all adaptations from across the pond are stellar, but this one is. Similar to the way "The Office" worked out, this show stands on its own. Veep deserves all the awards and accolades it has earned. Though everything revolves around Drefus' character, I'd consider the show to be an ensemble cast at its heart. Perfect casting all around. On an anecdotal note, it's great to see the little girl from "My Girl" grow into a talented comedic actress. Also love seeing anyone from the cast of "Arrested Development" (Tony Hale) in a comedy. Also Matt Walsh is brilliant... and i promise that's the last of the kudos.I'd be shocked if I didn't give the next season five stars.

Awesome! Julia Louis-Dreyfus is Hilarious!
Re-watching this wonderful comedic series! I loved it the first time I watched it and I still do. My favourite comic series of all time! Julia Louis-Dreyfus was always my favourite Seinfeld character (Elaine), in my opinion the funniest. She's even funnier in this series as the lead character. It is supposed to be a satire of Washington politicos, conniving politicians and their obsequious pandering operatives. It is very much is that, a crazy depiction of situations and interactions. I offer this as a complement, not as a criticism. When I watched the series the first time I thought it was very funny albeit an over-the-top depiction of Washington politics. Now, in retrospect I was probably wrong and the series is actually a far more accurate depiction of today's Washington scene. No matter what your political bent may be, real Washington is a partisan clown show..

Often very funny. You'd think this was enjoyable but not very realistic, that House of Cards is the more serious look at politics, but then you look at the incompetent people in the show who really don't know what they are doing, so much effort going into optics, the political infighting among the VP and president staff and how the VP can't really stand her president and infighting even among the VP's staff, and then you look at Trump, and you think, maybe this is much closer to the way things really in politics.

Lustig
