What a thrill to be able to open a book on Surrealism that not only explores the historical development of this art genre, but affords us the opportunity to experience its on-going cultural evolution through the works of some 40 + contemporary artists, including the author, Robert Zeller. About a third of the book is devoted to the historical development of 20th century Surealism, with its attendant emergence as both an off-shoot and response to Dadaism. The philosophies and works of almost 40 artists traditionally associated with the genres are represented, with the author affixing the end of this movement as such to the passing of its originator, Breton. The remainder of the book, over 2/3rd of it, is devoted to the continuing influence Surrealism has had in the art field, and the identification by the author of more than 29 contemporary artists he deems as New Surrealists, plus an additional 14 or so as potential studio practitioners. The author does not define by what he means as contemporary, but most, if not all, the covered artwork appears to be 21st century. In terms of organization, the book has both a detailed Table Of Contents and Index delineating the pages on which the artists and their respective works can be found. The overall quality of the print and reproductions is superb; the numerous full-page representations will have you examining for days.

Inspiration doesn't just pop into my mind; maybe it does sometimes. I'm always looking for it. I take a gamble and buy a book, hoping to find something. This book is a total score. So many wonderfully printed color plates. Very good contemporary art history. The actual book is printed and bound very well (better than any Taschen Press costing 3 times as much). I so happy I have this! I will be taking it to The Art Students League of New York to show my students.

A surprising book with splendid images of the highest quality in which Zeller, after the first chapter dedicated to the origins of the surrealist movement and its most representative artists, takes us on an imaginative journey into the world of contemporary surrealist painting, introducing us to many of its main protagonists. A chapter is specifically dedicated to the different creative and compositional processes that artists use to create a painting, in relation to surrealist influences, with extensive and detailed photographic documentation of the various phases of evolution of the pictorial work, from the beginning to end. I consider it an unmissable volume for all art lovers and professionals in the sector

I was expecting a very good book, but when I flipped through the pages and saw how the book was divided and organized, I was surprised. The text is very well written, the images are very well used to present the author's ideas and the work of contemporary artists is incredible.

Very beautiful book and well selected past and present paintings. The interview section with contemporary artists was structured in a way that one can compare the various artists and gives insight into their working practices. Not just a coffee table book but interesting to read as well!
