The international bestselling author of How Things Work and The Elements Trilogy turns his focus to a visual exploration of the inner workings and functionality of the marvelous machines that run our worldโfrom the first steam engines to giant turbines to today's tiny electrical engines. In Engines , the always entertaining and informative Theodore Gray explores the glorious guts and intricate innards of dozens of impressive machines. Through his engaging and unexpected stories and Nick Mannโs trademark gorgeous photography, Gray takes us on a journey from ancient Greek steam engines to our most sophisticated twenty-first-century machinery. We take time to appreciate the detailed functionality of the internal combustion engine, the connection between magnetism and electric motors, as well as hydraulics, robotics, and more. Each chapter builds on the previous, illuminating the evolution of engines and revealing the ingenuity brought to bear as humans invented and perfected these marvelous mechanical systems. Along the way, Gray regales us with tales of his own experiences working with and collecting these machines. For fans of how things are made and how they work, Engines is a loving tribute to the mechanical world. Review: A book for automotive mechanic apprentices - A very nice book with high print quality. The data, images, and information are all well-presented. Review: Good Gift for Dad/Engineer - A wonderful book! I bought this book as a gift for my father and he loved it. It arrived quickly and in pristine condition with that signature 'new book' smell. The content of the book was exactly what I expected - full of beautifully detailed and high resolution images of all sorts of engines. This is a perfect gift for that dad/engineer/nerd in your life!

A perfect gift!
ENGINES--attractive, informational, fun to browse. Before putting it on a side table, I removed the paper jacket for careful storage as I always do for such a book, and was amazed and pleased to see the inner cover of the book (shown in my photo) is just as beautiful as the jacket. A perfect gift for almost anyone, but especially those hard-to-buy-for persons.

My nephew liked it
Bought as a gift for my nephew. He seemed to like it as he was reading it when I left

A great accomplishment by a veteran author.
The book is very detailed and goes into (needed) detail of explanation and even โover the topโ regarding certain mathematical design features. A masterpiece of coverage and explanation which Iโve come to expect from his other works. Simple to complex and with simple anecdotes along the way, itโs a very enjoyable venture into mechanics, design, and historical significance. The abundance of pictures and schematics are well served as needed. A real treat for a โmech/headโโฆ

Errors in book!
I am a big fan of Mr. Grays books. This book is well enough done, and true to the character of his previous works. I found two glaring errors: - Highly refined kerosene is noted as being hexane on page 88. Very surprising to see this error given that Mr. Grey is knowledgeable about chemistry. Hexane is a much lighter fraction than kerosene, 6 carbons vs. 11 plus for kerosene. - On page 101 there is this statement: "Chevrolet has their "Hemi" engine" Wow, Chrysler has been dissed in a major way here. Did Mr. Grey do this to see if anyone really read his books? A couple of observations: - On page 14 he says that the human body is like a steam engine. Seems more like an internal combustion analogy is more apt. - In the section on electric motors he makes the statement that electric cars may have replaced IC cars be the time the book is read. Wishful thinking or what? Overall I enjoyed the book for the images and Mr. Grey's sense of humor, but disappointed in the mis-information contained.

Good idea, good execution.
This book is a good read to go through. Especially for me since I can't decide between mechanical engineering and physics. ( I still couldn't decide after but it's still nice to read ) This book covers engines (the core of mechanical engineering) from steam to combustion and more, along with covering a little bit of electrical stuff relating to motors and generators. It is written well and in an engaging fashion, with a good mix of theory, application, and history / tidbits. It contains amazing pictures and some graphs of how engines work. My only minor grievance is that there is not enough theory behind the topics, some good explanations but little and few between. Some formulas would be nice, I get that there is a rule that for every formula the sales are halved but I wish the book would have disregarded this, I bet it has enough beautiful pictures to overcome the rule. Anyways, I'm off to go buy an old two stroke leaf blower engine from eBay and see how it works thanks to this book. If your planning on doing the same, do it outside, with a mask filter (look into mask filters / cartridges), gloves, and safety glasses. I think that is the safety stuff for disassembly.

Extraordinary
This is a very remarkable book parts of which may challenge all but the most sophisticated engineer minds. The illustrations are excellent and the detailed analyses well written and not overlong. An absolute treasure trove, although certainly not for light reading.
