Good quality varnish.
This is quality varnish. Very easy to work with and covers beautifully. Used it on our wooden outdoor furniture, after sanding it back to bare wood. We live in a harsh, wet environment and oiling the wood just didn’t protect it enough. This yacht varnish should do the job and it’s brought the furniture back to its beautiful former glory, without having to use a wood stain. Very happy and this seller is brilliant- delivered so quickly.

holy moly
ok so here is my review. for the love of god please where gloves when applying this stuff and eye protection and a REAL fume face mask. this is super important. if your not painting outside go full PPE. don't go to hospital with a suspected heart attack like i did after inhaling varnish for 1 hour. ok boring stuff over, here's the good bit. you can sponge this on, gives decent results especially if you go with the grain. tin recommends brushing, i cant brush, and it was crap for me and i ended up making it run. someone with more experience could get way better results then me in good light. So i opted for the following. i contacted Johnstons to ask for help but they just said, brush it on, either way i bought a spray gun for my compressor. i diluted the varnish on a ration 10:1, cleaned surfaces with white spirits before spraying, i was doing a 50% overlap with my cheap spray gun. i get 2 coats down, it touch dries in 2-4hrs so u can go again. after 2nd coat i WET sanded it with 400 grit, now im applying it on wood sanded to 400 grit. the bench in video and picture is sanded to 400 grit, then applied a final coat. (second bench i sanded the 2nd coat to 800 grit, would have done 600 but only had 800). with these steps you'll get a really nice mirror finish. its a beautiful amber finish on very light coloured birch plywood. this plywood i used is BB grade cabinet plywood. i gave the product 3 stars for "easy to use" because in all honesty, you need to be ready. preparation is key. have paint finer and rags at hand to clean everything after, brushes, sponges guns, cups etc. if you spray it like i did, (i sprayed in shed) your entire shed will get sticky. all being said the results speak for themselves, if you take care to clean each coat with a rag and white spirits to make sure its super clean, you'll get fantastic results. I emailed Johnston's and told them they should update their tin with correct drying times and that it can 100% be sprayed. drying times i experienced are, touch dry: 2-4hrs depending on how thick the application is. if its sticky after 4, you applied too much. Cured: 16-24 hrs like it says on tin hope this helps, this really is a good product if you take care the whole process. Bench is now outside in the rain and water just runs off no problem. i like it so much i bought a 2nd tin already and this will be my goto product for outside stuff.

good, but not ideal for varnishing over white
do not use on white painted wood, it will discolour it. That said, if you were using on any other colour or on natural wood it would be brilliant. it has a purple colour to it when applying and dries 'clear' although has a creamy tint when on white wood. I was able to re paint over the varnish. A little goes a long way and spread nicely. not too sticky. touch dry after 2 days

Great protection and a clear durable finish
I used Johnstone’s Outdoor Yacht Varnish to protect wood that stays outside, and I’m very impressed with the results. It applies easily, spreads evenly, and dries to a clear, glossy finish without streaks. Once cured, the surface becomes tough and weather‑resistant perfect for garden furniture or any outdoor woodwork. The protection is noticeable from the first coat, and after two or three coats the wood looks fantastic. A high‑quality product that’s definitely worth the money.
