This is a fantastic usb-lightning flash drive. I use it to download music from my laptop (usb) and then connect to my iPhone (lightning). I then use the free app to play the music. Fast download, flawless playback. Can also be used for photos.

JUST WHAT I NEEDED

This device worked for me. However, the required iPhone I-FlashDeviceHD App is buggy. It is easy to use, but it did crash on me once. Because I was careful I lost no data. It took me several sessions and many hours to do the file transfer job from iPhone 12 Pro to Windows 11 PC Desktop computer. But it DID work. The transfer is S-L-O-W! It is NOT as fast as the Amazon Ad says! 8Mb/s to 13 Mb/s was my average from device to PC. I have the time so it did not bother me. I only wanted a safe file transfer! TIPS: (1) Go slow and know what you are doing. (2) Fully Charge your phone before any of this and watch your battery! (3) Always keep the App open while it is working. (Turn off iPhone sleep mode?) I kept my thumb on the screen and moved it around occasionally so it would not go to sleep on me. When it goes to sleep it can stop the process, or confuse you when you try to wake it up. If you don’t you could lose hours of time. The App breaks down categories of types of media and use. This is convenient so you don’t try and download the whole iPhone in one go. I-FlashDeviceHD App folders: Bursts Favorites Live Photos Portraits Recents Screenshots Selfies Slo-mo Videos Even with that said, for me, one folder had over 4,000 photos in it. After downloading and installing the App I decided to only allow it access to some of my phone. I don’t trust “Apps” (Read: random sketchy corporations) to stay out of every corner of my phone. I inserted the device into the iPhone and started the App. Look around in the devices file structure. I found my photos and videos in folders divided into the categories listed above. I chose the smallest number of photos in a folder to first experiment with. I did not want to risk losing data. I selected the images I wanted to transfer and followed the instructions/prompts. It placed the images in the devices drive area and exited the App. I then turned my iPhone completely OFF and THEN removed the device. I did not want to damage or corrupt the files. On the Windows 11 PC Desktop computer I software “Ejected” the device before removing it from the PC. PC device Eject: Select the device/drive you will remove, right-click and choose “Eject”. Then, and only then, it is safe to remove the device. You can corrupt the device partition, format and/or file(s) if you just yank it out without first ejecting the device or safely shutting your PC down first. Do what you want. I’ve learned the hard way. Don’t skip this step. I inserted the USB end into my Desktop computers USB 3 port. In the PC I looked for the device and found it named drive E. Your device name could be different. In the PC desktop I opened up the E drive on the device and found my iPhone photos. I copy and pasted them into a fresh folder on my desktop. Then I deleted the photos from the device once I knew they were all transferred safely. This way the device was ready to accept a new batch of photos from my iPhone. Rinse and repeat. It worked! Now, I slowly transferred entire folders of photos and videos from the iPhone to the Desktop PC in this manner. There were problems: The App locked up on me once and I had to shut the iPhone off and reboot it (turn it back on). I had to start from scratch on the work I was doing. Also, I was forced to reformat the devices entire drive partition a few times! Because I was going slow, I was able to copy all of the photos and videos across. But, 4 or 5 videos were corrupt or unreadable on my PC and I could NOT delete them from the device! This is why I reformatted the drive. Some of the corrupted videos had been large in size and I feared corrupting future file downloads from the iPhone and opted to start with a fresh format on the devices drive. The drive area on the device is a standard PC file format called exFAT (extensible File Allocation Table). On the PC Desktop computer I used the standard Microsoft Windows 11 program called “Computer Management” to reformat the device drive. Use only exFAT! Do not select NTFS or FAT. Study this tool before deleting/formatting things. YouTube has videos. You could easily delete your computers main C: drive! I wish the iPhone I-FlashDeviceHD App showed the full file names in the file selection process. When a folder holds over 4,000 files and you can not select by name… it is a long day! I give it a good rating because it worked and did the job I asked if it, file transfer. But, it has NO instructions and leaves much to the imagination. If you are comfortable working with files on a PC you will have little to worry about. Just go slow and eat the sandwich one bite at a time.

After installing the 2 star rated app and plugging the dongle in the app said was offline. Meanwhile I did manage to select some photos. However when I came back later and tried again the app never displayed a list of my albums. Just blank screen. I had to turn the iPhone off and on again to reset the app so would display a list of albums again. So I decided to test the instructions that if plug the dongle in without an app installed will display a prompt. So uninstalled the app. Plugged the dongle in. Nothing which indicates likely have a dud.

This thumb drive did its job and made copies of all the photos from the iPhone. The instructions were okay, but it’ll help if the person using the drive for the first time is computer/iPhone literate to figure atto do next to make the copy. Oh, and I hope future flash drives will have the option of actually moving the photos off the iPhone to the drive and not just copying them.

My problem with this item is the software to make it work is from China! But what else is new. I got this for a gift one of my friends have an older iPhone with very little memory, not sure if her phone even has enough memory for the supporting software. I will not touch someone else's phone.
