I think it'd work as long as the volume you compress is longer than the length of the compression straps. The more you put in, the more you can compress up to the shortest distance between the straps (i.e., when you pull the straps as taut as they get). Maybe you can find a YouTube video to see how these compression bags work.

To what temperature are the bags rated? I need to keep my grandson warm!

A compression sack is not a sleeping bag. You stuff the sleeping bag into the sack to save on space. You'll have to see what the sleeping bag is rated to -- that is usually included in description of the bag.

it would depend upon the stuffing in the pillows... super soft pillow, then then the 11L size. rock hard pillows then the 18L size. These compression bags do a fantastic job of forcing out the air and shrinking things down. My cool weather bag fits easily into the 18L bag.
