Hi, any D, AAA and AA are all 1.5 volt  batteries indivially. Depending on how the AA batteries are connected that voltage may be 4.5 volts and not suitable for the device they are being use in. I'd also think that even if the voltage was in range the current demand from AAs would make them quite warn. D cell batteries are bigger because they can provide higher current demands without overheating. 
I am not a battery expert by any means so it might be possible to do what you are considering but I'd contact a battery manufacturer's customer support and get a better informed opinion. Also be aware that  attempting to try the idea in whatever device  could result in damaging or destroying the device.if you are not careful. Good luck

I have a flashlight that holds 9 AA. Can i stack three of these?

These convert a D size battery space into a space for 3 AA batteries.  They also triple the voltage. they do this by holding the 3 AA batteries in series.  So I think the answer is no because you can't fit a D size converter into a AA size spot.  Now if you are replacing 3 existing series, D size holders, for a total of 9 AA, maybe it will work.  3 of these stacked will give you 9*1.5 volts =  13.5 volts.
