Hear Me Talkin' to Ya: The Story of Jazz As Told by the Men Who Made It

I first read this wonderful book in the 1960's. It was an orange Penguin classic edition and I loved the format and the atmosphere each vignette provoked. So much so that I lent it to several people over the years until the inevitable happened and it was not returned, and as time passed I forgot the name of the errant borrower. I was forever on the look out for this little orange book. Then I saw it offered on Amazon - and now I have a copy again -it's not orange but it's just as wonderful. If you love the old New Orleans buzz of the first notes of jazz and wonder how this music evolved and why and by whom, then you will truly appreciate this amazing book. Read it and glow!

I found the book interesting both from a historical and a personal perspective. The authors method of using the words of actual jazz musicians presents an entirely different picture of the development of jazz in the United States. But, how better to tell the story than to use the actual words of those who lived it. It's a bit raw, grammatically incorrect, but when one considers the subject, it is totally appropriate. I have read many jazz biographies, but this one held my attention better than any other. A must read for anyone interested in jazz.

This is not great literature but it is a wonderful book of jazz musicians talking about their experiences from the past. Lots of comments by musicians about the great days of New Orleans, Basie, Ellington and Bop. As I love Jazz this was for me a delight because it gave me so much background to the music. In my opinion a necessity for any person who wants to know and understand the history of Jazz

If you are only going to read ONE book about the beginnings of Jazz, this THE book to read. Told by the folks who started it all in their own words. You meet a wide cast of characters indeed. This is the book I give to students interested in learning early jazz styles. The letters of Joe "King" Oliver written at the end of his life when he was down on his luck are alone worth buying the book for. It shows what a noble man he was - no wonder he influenced Louis Armstrong so heavily.

This classic volume should be in the collection and the heart of any jazz fan or music history buff. These are the words of the players themselves, not an essay by a musicologist. First hand accounts of the art, the lives, the labors of famous and not-so-famous jazzmen (mostly men) creating more than they knew.

If you're into jazz history and haven't read the book, this re-issue of the original is a good read. While it contains some well worn anecdotes from well known musicians, what stands out for me is the interconnected web of entities and details from their lives that adds to our understanding a watershed period in western culture.

This is a great classic. An invaluable treasure for anyone studying of the birth of jazz and its development in the first half of the twentieth century. Reading the book now for one month I find it very useful for the needs of my research project on jazz and the civil society. The second hand copy I got is of very good quality.

Strait from the mouths of those who were there, this book is essential reading for all who are interested in jazz.

Absolute stone classic . Jazzers quoted to form a big picture up to about the late fifties . Thrill to bad behaviour and downright dislikes , gape at big mistakes and wrong opinions and turn green with envy at those able to be there staring at giants and being giants themselves . The section on Bessie Smith is , of course , worth the price of admission on its own.

A great book, a marvellous insight to the many musicians mentioned. Buy it !!
