Jules et Jim (Blu-ray)

One of the most prominent films of the French New Wave; with the scene of the three main characters running across the bridge, arguably being one of the most iconic images of the era.I watched it as a follow up to The 400 Blows and to see the film that is so often referenced in discussions about French cinema.I am pleased the say the film lives up to its reputation as a classic; being well acted and with an involving plot. Although Jeanne Moreau rightly gets a lot of credit for how she played Catherine, I thought Oskar Werner was excellent as Jules.Even the cinematic tricks of freeze framing certain shots and bringing a scene in from the top right of the screen; rather than seeming dated are actually nice references to the time and the innovation of Truffaut and other new wave directors.An enjoyable film and a must see for fans of the French New Wave. If you are a fan, a book worth reading is 'A Short History of Cahiers Du Cinema' by Emilie Bickerton which tells the story of the influential magazine and references Godard, Rivette, Rohmer and of course Truffaut.

A classic of French New Wave cinema directed by François Truffaut; I must admit it is a film I admire rather than actually like particularly; it has always struck me as rather mannered, though with every viewing I do find my attitude changing towards it; it certainly has some memorable scenes - I still love the song Moreau sings – it's something of an earworm; and the final scene is unforgettable.The UK DVD release from 2 Entertain has a commentary and a featurette with Truffaut talking about the film.It is – of course – a French film with English subtitles.4 ½ stars, ideally.

Not only a gem of the Nouvelle Vague, Jules et Jim is a cinema great. One of the finest achievements of that most serious of talents, Truffaut, this film is lively and fun from the start; who says a serious cultural experience can't be enjoyable? Jules et Jim is deservedly one of the best-loved art house films ever made.Although it was her two films with Louis Malle in 1958 that made her a New Wave icon, it was this role that brought Jeanne Moreau perhaps her greatest international acclaim. Not at all like her jazz-soaked, stylish debut with Malle, Jules et Jim nevertheless deals with very Nouvelle Vague concerns, not least the central menage a trois subject matter.Highly recommended to all film fans.

This was an avant-garde Black and White Film, by Francois Truffaut in 1962, based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roche. It begins about 1912 in Paris when Jules and Jim are romantic intellectual young men about town.(Oskar Werner and Henri Serre). Jules is Austrian, and they form a life long friendship, finding themselves on opposite sides during World War One, and worried that they may have killed each other in the trenches.Whilst in Pais in the pursuit of the opposite sex, a cousin of Jules brings two friends to a tea party. Jules jokingly suggests that they abandon formalities of speech and conduct. Both men are attracted to Catherine, portrayed by Jeanne Moreau, and she plays them against each other with her daring and unconventional behaviour, such as jumping in the river fully clothed to see who will rescue her, and dressing up as a man to go clubbing as one of the boys, and breaking dates with Jim, to be in bed with Jules.Catherine and Jules marry and produce a daughter. Jules continues his Art work for a living, and dreams of being an accepted writer. Catherine carries on with liasons with men in the village where they now live, Jules confides his misery to Jim when he visits them after the War. There is tradgedy brewing and it takes an unexpected twist, when Catherine plays on Jim's naivety and propriety, luring him into a car, and deliberately drives over the edge of a flood damaged bridge.Who loses and who gains is a question proposed. Is it Jim and Catherine because they both drown, but they are together,on another plane of existence, or is it Jules because he has lost his Wife and his Friend, but has his small daughter and is still alive to tell the tale?The action probably was not so avant-garde for the Sixties, and not very avant-garde for 2011, and it is probably not very avante-garde for 1912 either, and although it is considered iconographic, I think it is debateable whether Jeanne Moreau was the best choice to play such a femme fatal character. In reality I could not imagine Jim leaving his pretty new Fiance, rushing to see Catherine, and allowing her to kill him. Or Jules enduring the constant embarrassment she heaped upon him. One of the most memorable moments of the film is when Catherine sings a charming little song accompanied by one of the village men on guitar.I suppose the film has endured because it examines the nature of relationships, without giving any logical or comforting answers.The sound and picture quality is clear, and bonus features include commentaries by Jeanne Moreau, and Francois Truffaut.

I watched this at a cinema club at the Central School of Art aged 18 in 1968. In spite of my ignorant resistance to foreign films at that time, some of its magic infused my psyche. Now aged 69 a revisit to Jules et Jim has been a revelation and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The language is clear and beautifully recorded, the acting is joyful and convincing. Jeanne Moreau is the sublime femme fatale. Quite the masterpiece I wish I had the faculties to have appreciated 50 years ago

Francois Truffaut schaffte mit "Jules und Jim" das Kunststück - ausgehend von einer Skandalsituation "Zwei Männer und eine Frau ide ein ganzes Leben zusammenleben" einen Film zu machen, der so "rein" wie möglich ist. Er schaffte es, indem er eine schwebende Balance in diesem Dreiecksgeschichte, die die Jahre 1912 bis 1933 umspannt, einbaute. Dies sorgt für Leichtigkeit, pure Lebensfreude, aber auch für genügend Wehmut. Heute könnte man "Jules und Jim" auch als Plädoyer für die deutsch-französische Freundschaft empfinden und sicherlich war es von Truffaut auch so beabsichtigt, aber im Original ist Jules kein Deutscher, sondern Österreicher.Das ändert aber nichts an der Freundschaft dieser beiden Männer - beide lernen sich in Paris kennen und beide sind Schriftsteller. Beide sind interessiert am Austausch der Kulturen. Jules ist eher introvertiert, der Franzose Jim das Gegenteil. Doch beide teilen ein Interesse an der Welt der Künste und des böhmischen Lebensstils. Bei einer Diaschau sehen sie die Büste einer antiken Statue, die sich auf einer Insel in der Adria befindet. Sie sind von diesem Gesicht, dass einer Göttin gleicht, gleichermaßen sofort fasziniert und reisen natürlich auf die Insel, um sich vom Anblick dieser Frau aus Stein persönlich begeistern zu lassen. Nach Begegnungen mit mehreren Frauen treffen sie auf die launische, aber freigeistige Französin Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), die in fasznierender Weise fast schon wie eine Doppelgängerin dieser Statue gleicht. Das gleiche ruhige Lächeln wollen die beiden Freunde bei ihr erkannt haben. Eine Phase voller Lebensfreude beginnt - die drei laufen über eine Brücke umd die Wette. Chaterine hat sich einen Schnurrbart angemalt. Oder sie machen eine Radtour zusammen und toben anschließend durch ein Strandwäldchen. Jules hat es besonders schwer erwischt und tatsächlich nimmt Catherine seinen Heiratsantrag an. Sie folgt ihm nach Deutschland, eine Tochter wird geboren und die Familie lässt sich im Schwarzwald nieder. Der 1. Weltkrieg bricht aus - beide Männer werden eingezogen und beide hoffen, dass sie nie in die Situation kommen werden, der dem besten Freund womöglich das Leben kostet. Nach dem Krieg nehmen die beiden Freunde erneut den Kontakt auf. Jim besucht den Freund und seine Familie im Schwarzwald und bemerkt sofort, dass es in der Ehe nicht stimmt. Die Dreiecksbeziehung wird wieder aufgenommen. Doch auch mit Jim ist Catherine nicht ganz glücklich. Sie geht auch Affären mit anderen Männern ein. Als Jim seine langjährige Freundin Gilberte (Vanna Urbino) heiraten möchte, kommt es traurigen Schlußpunkt...Man sollte "Jules und Jim" nicht in der synchronisierten Fassung ansehen, denn im Original gelingt eher diese unsichtbare Magie, die der Film hat: Er lässt eine Welt verschwinden und eine andere wieder plötzlich auftauchen. Der Film gefällt durch seine intensive und subtile Energie. Trotz der heiklen Aspekte - noch verstärkt in den Jahren zwischen 1912 und 1933 - ist der Film seltsamerweise moralisch, vielleicht liegt es an der schrecklichen Traurigkeit, die der Film immer mehr entfaltet, wo er doch als beinahe schon federleichte Komödie begann. Auch optisch ist der Film von einer erlesenen Schönheit. Die Musik von Georges Delerue begleitet diesen bekannten Vertreter der Nouvelle Vague. Truffauts Film erhielt 1962 den Etoile de Cristal als bester Film des Jahres. Jeanne Moreau wurde weltbekannt.
