What is the wood species?

Honestly not sure about what type of wood it is but it's strong and not flimsy.

Can the liner inside the lid be removed? i dont want the tool slot liner

There isn't an actual liner. It's just some clips and some elastic bands. They aren't meant to be removed but you could forcibly remove them.
