Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee: Smooth, Ethical, and the Best Instant Brew Around
Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz Jar): Smooth, Rich, and a Game-Changer for Instant Coffee I recently tried the Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz jar, medium roast) for my morning brew and camping trips, and itโs hands-down the best instant coffee Iโve ever tasted. Sourced from organic, Fairtrade Arabica beans grown in the highlands of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, this coffee delivers a premium experience that rivals freshly brewed coffee, all with the convenience of instant preparation. Ease of Use: 5/5 Preparing a cup is effortless. I used 1โ2 teaspoons per 8-ounce cup, added hot water, and stirredโit dissolves instantly with no grainy residue, unlike cheaper instant brands. It also mixes beautifully in cold water or milk for iced coffee, which was a pleasant surprise for quick summer drinks. The 3.53 oz jar yields about 50 cups, and the recyclable glass packaging is compact, making it ideal for travel or small kitchens. A Reddit user noted, โItโs perfect for campingโjust pour into boiled water and stir,โ and I found it a lifesaver on a recent backpacking trip. Flavor and Aroma: 4.5/5 The flavor is rich, smooth, and full-bodied, with a mild bitterness and subtle notes of blackberry, as Wirecutter tasters described. Itโs not as nuanced as a pour-over, but for instant coffee, itโs remarkably close to diner-quality brew. The freeze-drying process retains the Arabica beansโ natural aromas, giving it a fresh, roasted scent thatโs far from the typical โinstantโ taste. One Amazon reviewer called it โdivine,โ and I agreeโitโs smooth enough to drink black, though I enjoy it with a splash of oat milk. My only minor critique is that using the recommended 1 teaspoon can taste weak for stronger coffee lovers; I prefer a heaping teaspoon or two for a bolder kick, as a Reddit user also found. Quality and Sustainability: 5/5 Mount Hagenโs commitment to organic, Fairtrade practices shines through. The coffee is made from 100% USDA Organic Arabica beans, free of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial additives, sourced from small-scale farmers in Papua New Guinea. The Fairtrade certification ensures fair wages and sustainable farming, which aligns with my values, as one Amazon reviewer noted: โIโd rather pay for this than Nestle.โ The coffee is gentle on sensitive stomachs, with no issues for me, unlike brewed coffee, which a user with stomach sensitivities also praised. The eco-friendly glass jar and resealable pouches (available in other formats) add to its sustainability appeal. Versatility: 4.5/5 This coffee is incredibly versatileโperfect for home, office, camping, or travel. Iโve used it for hot coffee, iced lattes, and even sprinkled it into recipes for a coffee crunch, as Vitacost suggests. The single-serve sticks (sold separately) are great for on-the-go, though I stuck with the jar for home use. Itโs ideal for campers or students, as noted by Vitacost, and its mild flavor suits a range of preferences. The only limitation is that dark roast lovers might find the medium roast too mild, but a decaf option is available for those avoiding caffeine. Value for Money: 4.5/5 Priced around $10โ$12 for a 3.53 oz jar (roughly 28ยข per serving), Mount Hagen is pricier than Folgers but far cheaper than Starbucks Via, offering better flavor and ethics. With a 4.7-star average on Amazon, reviewers call it โthe best instant coffeeโ for its taste and value. A Reddit user pointed out itโs more cost-effective than local roaster beans, yielding twice as many cups per dollar. The only downside is availabilityโharder to find at big chains like Kroger, but Whole Foods and Amazon stock it reliably. Final Verdict: Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee is a standout for its rich, smooth flavor, eco-friendly ethos, and unmatched convenience. Whether youโre at home, camping, or traveling, it delivers a near-fresh-brewed experience without the hassle of equipment. The mild medium roast may not satisfy dark roast fans, and stronger brews require extra granules, but these are minor drawbacks. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a premium instant coffee thatโs kind to both your taste buds and the planet.

Great coffee, shipping perfect most times other than once
We really do love this coffee. No bitterness and taste is awesome. Itโs great hot or cold mixes so easily using cold water itโs organic which is great and weโve ordered this countless amounts of times but our most recent order had all the caps to the jars broken. The seals were still on though. They gave us a refund going through the chat. It wouldโve been ideal if they could just send us caps or something. Didnโt feel like they needed to refund the whole amount even if we were keeping the product and would figure a way out to use it. Idk unfortunate. But will continue to buy.

Simply the best.
You found it. This is the best instant coffee you can buy. Mixes cold with unmatched smell and flavor. You can tell it's organic as it says it is. It doesn't have any of the chemical oil spill rainbow slick on the surface like cheap instant coffees. They don't seem to discount it ever because it has no competition.

In comparison to other coffees...
I am reviewing several instant coffees at the same time, and the same review will be found for all of them. My reviews are based on two criteria: How it tastes, and how well I wake up with it. Quick disclaimer, I am generally a health nut, with one exception, coffee. I am aware that instant coffee is not exactly in the healthy food category, but this is a choice that I make because I just don't have time to brew an actual pot of coffee. I'm starting with my worst, and will work my way down to my favorite, also note, I drink my coffee black. 6th Place: Davidoff Cafe Rich Aroma Instant Coffee This coffee has a great aroma, but tastes like Folgers (dirty dishwater). I was actually very disappointed as I had high expectations. I can deal with Folgers flavor, but this coffee made me feel awful; the same sick feeling that I get from Folgers instant coffee. (I swear Folgers must have some sort of contaminant in it.) I gave it a second chance, and felt just as bad. In the recycling it went. I tried to save the glass container, but the design is so ridiculous, that I couldn't even find a use for it. Flavor Rank: #6 Stimulant Rank: #6 5th Place: Jacob's Coffee Jacobs Kronung Instant I would say this coffee is a little better in flavor than the Davidoff, but not by much. And this coffee didn't make feel particularly well either. I wouldn't waste my money on either this one or the Davidoff brand. Flavor Rank: #5 Stimulant Rank: #5 4th Place: Buen dia by Juan Valdez Classic 100% Colombian Freeze Dried Coffee This coffee is okay in flavor, I don't feel sick from it, and the stimulant effect is moderate - more than the Mount Hagen, but less than some of the others reviewed. So the flavor is middle of the pack, and the stimulant effect is middle of the pack. It's okay if you're a moderate coffee drinker, but there are definitely better options. Flavor Rank: #4 Stimulant Rank: #3 3rd Place: Mount Hagen Freeze Dried Instant Coffee This coffee is absolutely yummy! The flavor is delicious, and just really makes you enjoy your first cup of coffee. But the weakness of the stimulant effect placed it below some of the others. I need three cups of this just to get going. I now only drink this one if I want to enjoy a nice cup of coffee, but have no need for large amounts of caffeine. Flavor Rank: #1 Stimulant Rank: #4 2nd Place: Douwe Egberts Pure Gold Instant Coffee The flavor of this coffee is quite good (not as tasty as the Mount Hagen organic stuff, but it is definitely more caffeinated). This coffee was on the top of my list until I found that Douwe Egberts offers a stronger flavor/darker blend (the next review). The stimulant effect is good, and the flavor is good. However the flavor of this one is a little weaker than the darker roast Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence. If the Pure indulgence wasn't available, I would settle for this one. Flavor Rank: #3 Stimulant Rank: #1 (tie) 1st place: Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence Instant Coffee This one is the winner. The Pure Gold is lighter in flavor than this one, and I don't care for it quite as much. Both have equal stimulant effect; with either of the Douwe Egberts two cups and I'm good for the day. I often feel I don't need a third cup half way through my day to keep going. The flavor isn't quite as good as the Mount Hagen, but it is the next best. And what it lacks in flavor is made up for in better stimulant effect. Thus is this my number one choice for now. Flavor Rank: #2 Stimulant Rank: #1 (tie)

Superb!
I've been using this coffee for many, many years and it's just superb! I love that it's fair trade and organic, plus there are no inconsistencies in the product, and the flavor and aroma are always outstanding! I used to go through the time consuming process of grinding my own beans and brewing it with a French press but hated the cleanup - dismantling the screen from the plunger, scrubbing everything, wiping the oils out of the grinder, etc. - so I tried this, and the flavor is just amazing, and coffee is now completely effortless! I can make exactly how much I want, fresh and hot, in just a few seconds without ANY compromise on flavor, and no time consuming clean-up! A side note: I use coffee as "medicine" for migraine management and it's very easy to "count the grains" and get exactly the right amount of "medicine" using an instant coffee versus using brewed coffee, which can vary in strength. Accurate and consistent dosing is especially vital for me, but anyone who has ever experienced a caffeine withdrawal headache understands the importance of consistency in coffee consumption. This product is very, very consistent in terms of strength as well as flavor, etc. This instant coffee is very portable (I keep some in my purse for emergencies), and I like instant granules like this better than instant powders because one false move and the powders go all over the place! It will last longer if you keep it in an airtight container. For example, I purchased the decaf but hardly ever use it and the granules have basically become glued together, but this is after perhaps a year or so. I use one and a half teaspoons of the regular coffee per day (and leave it in the jar it comes in, even though it's not airtight) and it never clumps up. Guests agree this coffee is delicious and can't believe it's an instant. It costs a little more than some but it's just such a superior product in every way that it's worth it. I sure hope they never stop making it! Cheers!
