Easy to assemble, sides velcro together and stay up firmly to corral crayons, markers, legos, etc. Kids can draw, eat, entertain themselves. I put a small pillow underneath to elevate it a bit, like a sofa throw pillow, because I didn't want my daughter straining her neck looking down to read or watch her iPad. FYI - the flat surface is not a hard plastic surface. No one is going to sell you a hard plastic surface to strap to your kid while you are traveling in an automobile, because in the event of a collision, that could result in injuries that could be life-altering at best, or fatal at worst, and their attorneys would most certainly counsel against that (and Amazon's attorneys would definitely counsel against that). So, no - it's not a hard tray like a tray you would find in a cafeteria, or the kind that folds down from the back of an airplane seat. But it won't hurt your kid, and it does a good job of what you need it to do while you are trying to get to your vacation destination/parents' house/rental.

This is a very convenient tray to have for a toddler. I honestly haven't used it for traveling just yet but we use it daily to keep busy activities contained. It can be used for several things. The only thing I would change is the space for the clear tablet holder and that's why it's not getting five stars. Realistically, toddler tablets need a special cover so that they don't destroy it within the first week. This cover makes the tablet a lot thicker and it does not fit with room enough for my daughter to put it inside and take it out by herself. So that was extremely frustrating for both of us. For now, it's holding coloring pages and thin books we rotate weekly.

We purchased this for our 4 year old daughter for a long car ride and I very much like the design and sturdiness. Surprisingly, my daughter, who was really into the idea of having her coloring books for the ride never actually did use them! My only issue (as others have mentioned) is the lack of cushioning on the underside as she did complain about it bothering her lap. A small pad or "beanbag" would nicely do the job. We used a folding towel for the ride home and she did say that helped a lot, and she actually did use it for a while.
