The Fountain of Youth for my 12 year old Maximus
I have a 12 year old Norwegian Forest cat who was 21 pounds a few months ago. For years he would have explosive extra stinky diarrhea almost daily. It would get all over his long fur and was really gross. He has also had some heart problems (I have taken him to a kitty cardiologist.) He is quite a large housecat and I worried he would not live long. Since switching to this food ALL of these problems are gone! I am not one of those gluten free health nut types but the grain-free cat food really works. After all cats are true carnivores while we humans are omnivores. His coat is shiny, his heart problems all but disappeared, his weight is down to a 18 lbs (17 is ideal for my big fluffy buddy,) and the litterbox has never been easier in all 12 years! I started with the Venison, Duck, and Chicken. The Salmon has noticeably improved his coat over the other flavors, and I can often see salmon skin or small bones when I scoop it out. Also, if you research you will find cats need balanced Omega 3 and 6 (which Natural Balance provides.) What's not to like? Okay, the smell. It isn't terrible. It you can't handle the Salmon smell the Venison was low-odor. I have tried so many different canned and dry foods from Friskies Senior Diet to the Rachael Ray natural stuff. In my opinion and research, this is the best option period for my cat and it might be for yours too.

This stuff is pretty dry and gross
I bought this food for the simple ingredients, but this stuff is super gross. It's really really dry, so it hardly comes out of the can. It has an odd smell. Theres something that's just not right about it. Cats stopped eating it, they eat around it when we try to hide it in other food. Im just stuck with all this gross food now. I would not recommend.

Great for us, once we found the flavor she liked.
Our vet recommended limited ingredient foods when our cat had an ear infection. She felt it was caused by foods and explained that it's often nearly impossible to figure out what a cat is allergic to so start with the foods. Our cat had always eaten your run of the mill canned and dry foods you'd find in any store. If she had her way all meals would be a can full of 99% of gravy and just a piece of the meats here and there. These LID foods don't have near the gravy of your run of the mill brand. They also don't smell as strong. We've discovered that she'll eat the whole can of the Salmon one in the day while only half of a can of the Duck or Venison ones. I've been rotating the other flavors in so we don't waste them and when she gets any can other than the salmon she looks at me like "you really think I'll eat that?" so it really is about finding the right flavor if your cat is kind of finicky. She also seems to like these better if we stir them up at least 2-3 times a day.

Many of my cats didn't like the Salmon and Green Pea
The bad, about half of my several cats won't eat it. They sniff and go right to the dry food. This is unusual because, for every other canned cat food, they go right for it. The good, you really get your money's worth. Whereas with Natures Instinct they've been watering their food down and now it has much less meat (they call this watering down "broth") this food is so dense it's almost hard to get it out of the can. I have trouble cleaning the can out to recycle it. For this reason I may try another flavor but the salmon didn't work for me.

Not all flavors are created equally
This review is for the Salmon and Green Pea formula. I will start off by informing you that my cat will eat any wet food. I have yet to encounter one that he doesn't like. After years and years of tummy issues, mostly him vommiting his food out after eating, I took him to the vet. After examing him and running some tests they told me they didn't believe it was anything serious or life threatening. That I needed to give him a bland diet. So, I did some research and bought him this food. Sure enough he gobbled it down and then something miraculous happened, he stopped vomiting after every meal. I was happy โบ , until I kept noticing that he was leaving something at the bottom of his bowl. After close inspection I realized they were fish bones. Now, I know cats eat bone but I was concerned about them getting stuck in his throat as they were sharp and not tiny. Sure enough a few days later his meow was gone. Fearing it was the food I bought him a different flavor (I wanted to stick to this company because it was working). After changing the flavor/protein his meow came back in 3 days. Now I'm not sure, as I am not a vet, if it was infact the food that hurt his throat. However, I do know there was bones in it and I know that once I changed it he was back to normal. FINAL SAY: So in all, This food is great for my cats sensitivity it has really been successful in keeping his food in. But I would NOT recommend the Salmon formula because of the fish bones at the bottom of my cats bowl and also because it smelled awful, a smell that if you got it on your hands, would leave your hands smelling fishy all day.

Reliable canning process and very thick
I've started paying close attention to how well canned various specialty canned cat foods are. There are a couple other brands (not NB) where the ingredients are great, but the tops of the pop-top cans look kind of half-way secure. Even though they give the reverse suction sound when you open them, you feel like you need to carefully check for it because the tops look like they're not especially tightly canned. And I've received some of a certain popular brand that had no seal - you could push the top down and up - even though the can was closed. With Natural Balance, they look as well-canned as say, Campbell Soup. I'm willing to give up the perfect ingredients for a secure canning process. (edit: These ingredients are very good too. Petco is not reliable as the retailer.) Also, I can add a lot of water to a single can and make several cats happy because the contents are so thick. Apparently it tastes great because they all get so quiet lapping up the food mixed with water.

Used To Be Great In The 6oz. Cans - What Happened?!
I used to LOVE this cat food for my finicky cat, but I used to get it in the 6oz. containers until I couldn't seem to find them on the internet anymore. So I ordered a case of the 5.5oz food, and it's totally different - darker and something smells off about it. I've been feeding it to my cat for about a week (cuz I mean, I bought a whole case, stupid me thinking this would be the same food), and my cat has vomited and had terrible diarhhea-like poos that she then tracks all over my apartment. Her litter box is like an explosion. I can't deal with it anymore, it's not getting any better, and obviously I just need to cut my losses and purchase a different type of food. I am very disappointed that there would be such a change in the recipe between can sizes (or perhaps a lack of quality control as evidenced by the other reviews on here).

My kitty loves this stuff!
I love the Natural Balance line! I had just gotten my cat from the shelter where they told me she could have some food allergies because she had been throwing up her food. I feed my problematic and allergic-to-everything Pug Natural Balance so I decided to feed her the same. Sheโs been on this food for a few months now with 0 issues. She is happy, healthy and energetic! Also, her coat looks amazing! I feed this along with the same line dry food.

happy cats
the cats love this food, and I believe it's one of the better quality choices on amazon, too. Beware that shipping has left some of the cans dented, so I'm using those up first.
