Planet of the Apes: The Original Topps Trading Card Series (Volume 1)

Nice book with very clear photographs of the cards. Almost scale representation too. Interesting insight into the cards origin, from someone who was involved in the actual creation process. Never knew about the stipulations, and limitations between the card companies and the movie producers. It was a very interesting read.

Includes cards from the 1968 original move, the 70's TV series, the Tim Burton re-imagining, and a few cards from the most recent Apes trilogy (Rise, Dawn, War).

This is a nice book with the card images well-reproduced and a good history of how they came to be. There is one problem, though. I was eight-years old in 1968 when the original film opened in theaters where I lived on Long Island, NY in April of that year. I first saw PLANET OF THE APES at the beginning of that month, and then again in late June of 1968. Between that time I discovered there were Topps bubble-gum cards from the film and I collected them all, and when I went to see the movie for the second time in June, just a week after my ninth birthday, I had an entire set of 44 "Planet of the Apes" bubble-gum cards in the pocket of my cargo shorts. So, what's the problem? This book says the original card series came out in 1969. Not true. It came out in the Spring of 1968. I was there. The book does say that the original series of cards was not a big seller, and I can confirm that because I remember that eventually they sold the cards in clear-wrapped sets of ten. So, Topps must have had a lot of them that didn't sell in packages of five with the stick of gum, and then tried to sell as many as they could. I loved the movie so much that I eventually bought more than three hundred of them, and I still have every one of them to this day, including an original wrapper and the counter box they were sold out of.

Nice addition to my Planet of the Apes collection. Great little hardcover filled with pictures of vintage cards of the Ape franchise. Really brings back the memories. Buy it! Taylor would have if he wasn't busy blowing the planet up.

The book arrived in the time frame promised it was great to see all the old trading cards again

Book is not like I expected but still pleased with it. The book does have nice photos of each card front and back, front being shown on one side and the reverse on the back side of the same page. The book adds to with my original card collections. Book has clear images of cards, overall pleased with purchase. Image of cards appear to be 1 to 1 size of original cards.

I really-really wanna like these books...produced by a very good publisher, with text by a established writer, and ACTUAL former Topps employee....so why aren't these books better? As someone else mentioned in a review in ref to their SW book....photographs of actual cards, w/bad reproduction. What happened to the original negatives...or whatever source material was utilized? Now I understand if they were going for a straight repro of the cards...but...what's the point...these are books-at least use better tech which I'm sure is a standard for the publisher, and enlarge them...larger than actual size. On one page have a large version of card, and on opposite page an enlarged cardback. Not so difficult-Tho the page sizes are relatively small they could have gone a bit bigger. I have most of the books in this series, including Wacky Packages, but I pretty much feel the same about all of them. They also dropped the ball on Batman's 75th...missed opportunity. where's the book w/all those amazing 60's cards...between the TV show, and the cards w/that glorious Norm Saunders artwork...I'd want those more than all the other's. It's a shame really...great concept...poor execution-these could have been much better books.

This was really neat to get. I have my own set of cards. Just nice to see the book and jacket like a pack of cards. Especially the jacket being the same stock or so it resembles the wrapper used back then. Which means jkt stock is easy to rip. Thank you

Beautifully photographed and nicely assembled Would have liked to have learned more about the original movie card set as those were an interesting bit of late 60s bubble gum card culture - among all the hockey and baseball cards you had these pics of people being hunted by apes. That jarring juxtaposition must have been like when the Mars Attacks series was introduced in 1962. You had all these 8 year-olds saying "This is crazy. What is this?" All in all a great reference book even if you don't care about the Tim Burton reboot.

If you're a fan of Planet of the apes or a fan of the old bubblegum cards you'll love this book. A true labor of love with lots of fun back stories and behind the scenes stuff. Wish Topps would do a Superman trading card book too.
