Conversation starter
My wife read this book to a second grade class as a follow up to a positive environmental change that took place in their own neighborhood. The children were captivated with the “gritty” nature of the book. The lesson focused on the idea that young children can make a difference.

One of my favorites
This is a fabulously written book; however, it's more geared towards older children. My 4 year old loves it, but he doesn't understand the thematic implications at all. It's one of those children's books that means more to you as you grow older. It's beautiful.

Great Book but too deep/sad for young children
I liked this book a lot however its a little dark for younger children. I got it to read to our kindergarten age Girl Scout troop. The main character a girl starts out as a thief and her heart softens. I had to skip several parts of the story. At least one other mom was not pleased with my choice. My daughter likes the book . The promise is kept, the thief's heart is changed in a very zen like way. The girl does not however live an easy life she instead lives a lonely life fulfilling the promise. It would actually be a great book for discussion with older children ages 8 or 9.

Beautiful
Beautifully illustrated, the story shows how our lives may affect many more than we know through a "pass it on" action.

Hearts can change
This is a beautiful story of change and love. Thr city's heart has hardened. Everything is cold, dark and grey. In it lives a girl who is also aggressively trying to make ends meet by stealing. But a chance encounter with a wise woman changes the course of her life and the life of the city. Hearts can change, our lives can become simple, beautiful and harmonious. This is a story with so much depth! I strongly recommend it for both adults and children :)

Touching and beautiful
My new favourite children's picture book! My year 1 class have loved reading and writing about this book. It does have a rather dark start as picture books go, but the descriptive language used is so beautiful that you find yourself drawn in instantly. I found myself getting goosebumps reading it aloud to my class and they were desperate to hear each new page. The transformation of the city is a poignant reminder of the importance and beauty of nature- an important and very relevant subject matter for today's children.

I loved it and it was well written
This is a story to show how one person's kindness can change someone who had no vision for her own future and what she was able to do that change a community.I loved it and it was well written; easy for children to appreciate too.
