Actually this is a good thing in that the peg cannot drop out over time however inserting the peg might be a little difficult. So what I do is use a pair of strong pliers, cover the jaw with a washrag so the pliers do not slip or mar the peg or furniture, and insert the peg holding it firmly with the pliers. This allows me to be able to twist the peg back and forth a bit, easing it into the hole while pressing firmly. I have tried various pegs over the years and these are simply the BEST.

One of the reviewers said they were magnetic and thus were not stainless. I am not s metals expert but I know that some stainless can be magnetic so I decided to do a test. After sanding both to expose raw metal, I soaked some steel nails and one of these shelf pins in vinegar for 24 hours and then transferred them to salt +hydrogen peroxide. The steel nails were completely rusted after one hour so I took them out but left the shelf pin in the solution for 12 hours. (see photo) There was a tiny bit of rust after 12 hours on the pin but I would say that shows it must truly be a type of stainless, as the nails were rusted in just a few minutes. I haven't actually used the pins yet so I only gave 4 stars. Will update to 5 if they fit and hold well.

They were too small for my shelves.

These replace plastic pins on bookshelves. The plastic ones are too breakable. These are very sturdy and fit the purpose well. My shelves are custom made 2' long that hold a lot of weight. It is important that the pins do not break or the whole row of shelves would crash. These pins guarantee sturdiness.

I really want to use these in my new pantry as they look great. Unfortunately, I could not get them into a 1/4 in holes without using a hammer and damaging the holes. Regular smooth shank 1/4 in pins slid in perfectly.

I'll never use another shelf peg.These are really a great solution to having shelf components fall out the dumping the shelf on your head.

Very deceptive they are not stainless steel! The shape and function is OK but they are magnetic and are cast from a magnetic material that will break if stressed. I'll see how they hold up to outdoors use.

These are very nicely made but a bit too big for my shelves. The dimensions should be a little clearer.
