Interesting method, could work on logistics for the classroom setting
I'm not sure whether parents who purchase this book online are homeschooling or using this as a supplement to their child's math lessons in school. My son's school uses Envisions Math beginning in Kindergarten, and this is his second year using it in 1st grade. Personally I find it fascinating and effective, presenting math problems using alternative viewpoints. Children don't simply learn to add/subtract by memorization, but by thinking through the equations using visuals and some explanation. This will hopefully help them solve formulas later in life as math becomes more complex. While all the parents at school initially gawked at the methods and were clueless as to help their child at home, I feel many of us have a clearer understanding of where the book is leading our young mathematicians. My biggest concerns about the book are more with regards to the logistics, especially for K and 1st graders: 1) There are no accompanying workbooks for students to keep at home, and therefore teachers need parent volunteers to weekly tear out 25 - 32 chapters worth of homework sheets! Poor teachers are busy enough without having to expect this additional task of them. Couldn't the publisher reduce the 2-volume books into 1 by removing the end of chapter homework practice into a separate workbook? 2) Many K and 1st grade students cannot read, and most of the assignments in this book require reading (and sometimes re-reading) from an adult to understand the question. This makes it difficult for children to tackle the assignments independently before showing parents or teachers the finished produce. The accompanying website, which the teacher provided parents access to, offers some interesting videos/activities, which I don't use with my son since he seems to be fine with the concepts and since we are not yet relying on computer based programs as support.
