are these real boar bristles? Why then do they feel and look like plastic?

Welcome to BESTOOL. Please kindly know two points of this BESTOOL boar bristle WITH ADDED nylon pins hair brush before your order.

Firstly, this brush is NOT a pure boar bristle hair brush. It is a BOAR HAIR WITH ADDED NYLON PIN hair brush which is benefit most for those who has thick or normal hair.
 Nylon Pins: white and rounded tips for better detangling
 Boar Bristle: Black and little shorter bristle for better spread natural oil throughout entire hair

Secondly, all boar hair used in this brush comes from 100% REAL captive boars, and the boar hair is cut seasonal by farmers. 
This almost pure black bristle is higher grade and more expensive than those mix brown color at the tips of bristle.

A scientific but simple method of identifying real or false of boar hair. If you have any doubt of its real, please test it as what I suggest.

Prepare materials: 
1pc scissors
1pc lighter
1pc BESTOOL boar bristle with added nylon pins hair brush

Operation:
1. Cut several pieces Black boar bristle from the BESTOOL hair brush;
2. Use a lighter to ignite the cut boar bristle

Results of the REAL boar hair:
1. During the burning, the real boar bristle can smell of human hair (because animal oil) ; while the fake boar bristle will smell like the plastic burning.
2. After burning, the real boar bristle will become microparticle ash; while the fake boar bristle will become Non-millable solid.

Question 2

Where do they get the boar bristles? Are any wild boars hurt in the process?

The boar bristles are extracted from the captive alive boar, which like Shaving wool. The farmers plan a picking time according to different boars instead of killing or hurt them.

Question 3

May I use a drop of essential oil of lavender to help eliminate the rubber smell ? Or will the essential oil damage the bristles?

Don't know if this will properly answer your question but the majority of the time when I brush my hair with this brush it is with an oil in my hair whether it be coconut or argon oil and I have not noticed any change in the brush or damage to the bristles. Although I have not directly placed drops of oil on the brush itself I have gotten oil on it. Hope this helped a little.
