Cars Toon - Mater s Tall Tales Review: Mater Saves the Day! - My 18-month-old son hates diaper changes. If it's a quick diaper change, I can manage just by singing/dancing/holding him down. If it's a *ahem* long diaper change, I must. have. Mater. He loves it like no other tv show or movie. Even the Cars movie doesn't do it for him like Mater's Tall Tales. I think it's because these cartoons move very quickly and jump right into the action. So, he watches and usually remains still enough for me to do what I need to do. Sometimes, after the diaper change is over, I leave the show on and allow him to watch it. I have to admit right now that I'm against all screen time before a child is two, but... life just happens sometimes. If he watches the show and I catch a little bit of it, I have to admit, it's very entertaining for adults. It's also very well-made with a high production value, and I think my son can tell. My only other quibble with the show is Mater is not the best role model. I know it's called Mater's Tall Tales, but he's really just a liar. And "women" are really only featured as a silly/vaguely sexual prop. I just feel like it's slightly mysoginistic, but it's a cute little cartoon, so I should also probably lighten up. That's why I didn't knock my rating down one star--most people probably wouldn't notice or care about the things I'm pointing out. But if you're very, very concerned about the values your child gets from Disney movies, this may not be for you. I personally will allow my son to see it now but it would be something I will phase out when he gets out of diapers. (Soon, hopefully!) Review: Great on more levels than one - Maters Tall Tales in the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack gave me a Blu-ray for myself and a DVD fro my granson who wears his favorite discs out. This is his second copy of this release. The Tall Tales are short, funny and can keep even me occupied for a while. I had an elderly Uncle who has passed on due to cancer. During one of my visits he told me that Cartoons were not meant for choldren but for adults. Now, at nearly 61, I see his point. No child will read the signs posted by Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in the classic "Duck Season, Rabbit Season feature...or read the huge ACME boxes delivered to the Coyote in the Road Runner Cartoons but they did offer my Uncle and I some quality time before he passed and offer the sane good times for my Grandson and Granddaughter when we watch their favorites together. Maters Tall Tales are great any way you slice it but as a warning to parents...while you may tire of the child's favorites, this is the prime time to bond with the child. Remember that you were once that age.

Cars, Continued!
This entertaining (albeit short) series of vignettes continues the saga of Disney's delightful movie, Cars. The tales focus on Mater's backstory. The stories are so fantastic, they couldn't be true... or, could they? Each of Mater's Tall Tales leaves that question enjoyably open ended, a humorous twist that won't be lost on the kids. With big studio movie production quality from every facet (writing, animation, sound, voice acting) this feels like an extension of the original film in every way. Larry the Cable Guy reprises his role as Mater and Keith Ferguson steps into the role of Lightning McQueen. Don't worry that Owen Wilson didn't return (for whatever reason). You (and more importantly your kids) won't miss him. Ferguson's Lightning is nearly flawless and you probably wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't read the credits (or this review). The only reason I wouldn't give this DVD an "A+" for grade is that it clocks in at a very spritely 38 minutes. It'll leave you wishing it went on for twice as long, but that's ultimately a reflection of it's high production quality. If you or your kids are Cars-a-holics, I couldn't recommend this spin-off DVD enough.

Cute video but it stopped playing, but started again
Update: Even though the dvd did not look dirty or damaged, I thoroughly cleaned it and now it works fine. I had already arranged an exchange with Amazon (very easily done at no expense) which couldn’t be canceled. This is a cute video and my grandson loved watching it until it stopped working. We had watched it over the past 3 weeks about 5-10 times and today it started freezing and going silent, restarting and freezing again. Finally the screen just went black with no sound at all. It didn’t turn off, just played a black silent screen. At first I thought the problem was with my TV or DVD player, but multiple other DVDs work fine. I’m not sure if this is a copy of an original or what? I’ve never had a DVD just stop working, and we only had it for less than a month.

Fun for kids and grown ups
My little boy loves Mater, and I'm sorta keen on him myself. These shorts are a ton of fun and have all the cleverness and staying power you would expect from Disney. You don't have to be 2 years old to want to watch these again and again! The dialogue is witty and the design is gorgeous, and you'll be amazed at what you catch that you missed the first dozen times. Plus, the extras are very entertaining, too. They are done in a documentary style, of course, but my little guy will watch them with just as much attention as the features. He and I both especially enjoy the storyboards for the ideas that didn't make it past the drawing board. They are just as fun as the finished cartoons!

Ever since my 3 year old son saw this advertised he's been hassling me to get it for him. I ordered it and it came a couple of weeks ago - and its never been off our tv since. The format is good - short stories to keep even the easiest sidetracked boy interested and they are very funny. I know some other review have been negative, but me and my husband love them almost as much as my son. Its also nice that Mater is the star (my favourite character by far from Cars) and not Lightening McQueen - as most other film follow-ons would do. They are what they are - a cheap dvd which will keep the most talkative and curious toddler quiet for at least 30 minutes everyday - to me that's heaven. And yes I know that I've had to explain what some of the stories are about (Mater Private Eye) but so what if he doesnt get it - he's only 3, he still finds them funny, and so do I. So enjoy it, and here's hoping that Disney/Pixar produce some more, at 5 minutes a go, how hard can it be?????

Wish it was a bit longer but in our house have replayed the two cars movies too many time was happy to add another to the mix and it turns out my son loves this one asks to watch Mater. Its 35 mins of a few short skits but they are funny and there are other cars characters in it too. Would recommend to anyone who's kids are repeatedly watching cars movies.
