PetSafe Busy Buddy Tug-A-Jug Treat Dispensing Dog Toy, Small

This treat dispenser has a very high level of difficulty but great if your dog has figured out others too easily. It’s not as durable as I’d like (the first one cracked) but it’s the only treat toy I’ve found that takes a long time to empty. It’s easy to load with kibble and requires a lot of effort and focus from my dog. I have two dogs—the beauty and the brains. One hasn’t figured it out and has given up while the other took a few hours with some coaching. Now that she’s cracked the code, it still takes a good 15-20 minutes to retrieve a half cup of kibble. While it’s a bit expensive for a plastic canister and a rope, it’s been worth it since the other toys I’ve tried lasted my girl 2-3 minutes. And it’s totally safe unsupervised (but fun to watch when they get it)! I wouldn’t suggest for really small dogs because of the size and weight. If your dog can’t figure it out, you could always cut the rope out and see if they can flip it around to get the treats out of the nozzle. I can’t emphasize enough this is a highly challenging product.

I bought this for my treat-motivated, destruction prone Chihuahua-Jack Russell mix and she loves it. With the rope it is almost longer than her, but she loves to drag it around with her to wherever we are in the house and start working at getting the food out. I typically fill it half way up with small-dog kibble and even once the food starts coming out less frequently she'll keep at it because she can smell it and knows it's there. She'll probably play with it for 30 minutes or longer - which is really great for her. She never sits still unless she is in her crate or laying on someone in bed, so we'll take 30 minutes as a success. On another note, my Dachshund-mix could not be less interested in this. He is an older dog (8) and doesn't seem like he wants to be bothered with it. He was never one for complicated toys. Although, he does like hanging around when his little sister is playing with it and cleaning up any kibble she misses. ***** UPDATE 12/2013 - Removed 1 star. After around 5-6 months the bottle cracked and the lid no longer fastened on so it lost a lot of its function. The pup still enjoyed playing with the empty bottle and rope, but it's been awhile since she's taken it out of the toy box. I think I'd buy another one because she really did like it while it was intact.

We were so excited to get this Tug-A-Jug! Veronica had one years ago, and it lasted quite awhile, but eventually the base cracked and it wouldn't screw shut. Veronica had developed a very efficient system in which she picks the jug up from the bottom, holds it upside down while at the same time stepping on the rope. This causes the kibble to fly out of the jug. Unfortunately years of gripping the end of the jug took it's toll. Our second Tug-A-Jug was just plain weird. For awhile they were replacing the rope with a rubber *rope*. It totally didn't work for Veronica and she hated it. Just recently I saw the Tug-A-Jug here on Amazon and it looked like the original design - with an actual *rope* made of rope (and yes, it is). It didn't take Veronica long at all to remember her old technique. Despite that she is a bit of a whiz at food puzzles (as most slightly overweight, extremely food motivated, convinced they are in a perpetual state of starvation, dogs tend to be); the Tug-A-Jug does slow Veronica down some and makes mealtime more of an "event" as opposed to over before I turn around from putting her kibble back in the cabinet. We love the Tug-A-Jug, reasonably sturdy and well made and a ton of fun. The sizing however is way off, and I first ordered the medium/large for dogs over 40 pounds because Veronica is 55 pounds and I didn't remember the size of our original toy. The medium/large is ginormous. Even with the small, Veronica's kibble dinner doesn't fill 1/4 of it (full disclosure, she also gets breakfast, lunch and snacks in addition to dinner - so we are not by any stretch of the imagination starving her). Still the small is plenty big enough. The mediem/large would have been too unwieldy for her. I had no problem at all exchanging my medium/large for the small.

I've got a 8 mo Border Collie mix. I use different food dispensing toys for the majority of his meals to help keep him mentally stimulated. I got this because I thought that it would give him some variety over the toys we already have: various Kongs, stuffable toys, Kong wobbler. He's a very smart pup, but he could not figure out how to use this as it was intended to be used. It was not easy even for me to get the food out using the rope, and I've got two hands. I liked the concept but it just does not seem to work very well in practice. I ended up just removing the rope completely and he is able to get the food out by rolling the bottle around. So...not a complete loss, and it does keep him occupied for a bit. However I feel like I could get the same use out of an empty soda bottle, it would just take a bit longer to fill up.

The kibble I feed is too big to come out even with dog being persistant. IF I hold the bottle and push the rope in and then have my dog pull rope out some kibble does come out. But regular rolling it around and wiggle of rope doesn't do anything. So my dog just wound up frustrated and barking at it. Not a good toy for us. The material is very hard and feels like it should be brittle. It's really noisy when rolling around on the floor. Again it is not a good toy for us.

I have searched high and low for a toy that is actually challenging for my two very clever Border Collies. When I found the small size at TJMaxx, picked it up--it's actually bigger than I thought it would be (see picture I posted). For reference, both our dogs are about 35lbs. Most of the time we give them "brain" toys and they figure them out in 3 minutes and then that's it for that toy. I really do love Kongs for our dogs...they just take planning (i.e. you have to fill them and let them freeze) for them to take any time and even then they're usually empty in about 15 minutes. We also have "treat balls" which are great, but again are empty in about 15 minutes, not to mention the noise. When those things roll around on the hard wood floors it's like a train coming through the living room. This toy, however, is fun for the dogs, isn't noisy and doesn't really take any planning on my part at all. I just used it for the second time to feed one of our dogs dinner. It took her about 30 minutes to empty a cup of food. 30 minutes! That's unheard of!!!! I just ordered two more (one for our other BC and another for my parents' BC) and I can't wait for them to arrive! ***UPDATE 5/21/2013*** The threading on one of ours broke after about a month due to my dog's persistent, not to mention a rough, methods. We have since purchased a new one and have been using it nightly. We've tried crumpled paper and putting a tennis ball in each jug to slow our dogs down, but they both appear to have it down. It takes them about 15 minutes to finish them now. I miss the week where it took them 30 minutes, but oh well. It turns a 15-second meal into a 15-minute meal. That's something, right?

My rambunctious, rope pull-loving, endlessly curious dog inhales her food. Hoped this purchase would slow her down and keep her occupied. She rolled the bottle on the floor. She heard the food in it and rolled it more. Sniffed a little. Rolled it again. Then walked away. I decided to interact with my dog and the Busy Buddy. She would pull on the rope, but pulling makes nothing come out. Sometimes 1 or 2 pieces of kibble would drop. But my dog would only roll this product on her own, which dispenses nothing. After my fourth or fifth attempt, my dog wouldn’t even acknowledge it. So out of our lives the Busy Buddy went. Another item of note is I have wood floors. The plastic bottle is very loud rolling or dropping on wood floors.

I get the small size for my boxer. She's gone through about one per year. She throws them around on the wood floor, so they do eventually crack, but they hold up longer than most of her toys. They keep her interest longer than other treat toys. She LOVES to tear things apart. If you leave her and her sister alone for the day with nothing to keep her busy, she starts looking for things that would be fun to shred. The treat jug keeps her busy. She has a bunch of different treat balls, and can empty them out in under 10 minutes. With the jug, she can get out enough treats to keep her going back for more, but they're hard enough to get out that she gets tired before it's empty. She takes a break then comes back for more later. For higher energy dogs who love toys and won't give up until they get the treats, this is perfect. My other boxer really has little interest in toys (unless it involves trying to take them from her sister). If I sit down next to her and move the jug around, she'll get the treats out. But as soon as I walk away, she doesn't want to put in the effort. The treats don't come out fast enough for her not to lose interest if I'm not also playing with her. For her, the simpler treat balls that pay out every couple seconds are better. A lower energy dog who doesn't need something to keep them busy is probably going to give up on this toy and leave it laying full of treats on the floor.

My dog loves this toy! This is actually our second time purchasing one; the first one lasted 8 years before my dog managed to fray the rope and I had to take it away. Most toys she destroys pretty quickly, especially when treats are involved. However, this one not only lasted, but also keeps her invested a lot longer than other dog treat and puzzle toys. In the same span of time she’s gone through about 4 orange treat ball dispensers. I’m very happy with my purchase!

二種類の知育トイを試してみましたが、簡単にクリアしてしまうのでこれなら簡単に出すことが出来ないかな？ と、この商品を購入してみたんですが、人間がヒモを引っ張りながら？ まわして取ろうとしても(要はワンコにお手本を見せようとしても) コツがいります。 手でもって逆さまにした時点で「あ、これじゃダメだよな」と思いました(^^; ウチのワンコは根気だけはありますのでひたすら転がしてチャレンジしていましたが、中に入れておいたタマゴボーロは見事粉々になり、ワンコはタマゴボーロの粉を出して舐めていました(^^; ワンコはそれでいいっぽいのですが、少し可哀想でした。 頑張る子はひたすら頑張って回し続けると思いますので、タマゴボーロやクッキー・ビスケット系はやめておいた方が無難です。
