Does the width of the shoe increase or decrease in size? Or is the size option only for the length?

They don't make wide shoes. I'd go with a 14. In dress shoes you always want to go 1/2 to one size smaller. Just my experience since I use dress shoes in my opinion career.

Will these go through a metal detector?

They do not have a steel shank or metal eyelets, so should go thru just fine.

Order a half size to full size larger, trust me.

Seems decently made but a very narrow shoe. I took the advice of others and ordered a half size up and the shoes were still very tight. I wore them around the house with thicker socks and they broke in nicely.
