Is the barrel varnished?

Varnishing is good for barrels you want as decoration. But you do not want for barrels you are trying to age. It does not allow the barrel to breath properly and can leach varnish into your liqour.

We have had the water in the barrel for a week and it is still leaking. Do you have any suggestions?

A major problem with the recommended sealing process is that it removes much of the sugars and other flavor from the barrel. Whiskey barrels should flavor and color whiskey. No distiller that I know of would ever soak a new whiskey barrel in hot water, leave it for a day, drain and repeat.
