Works on mosquitoes, but not with biting flies or midges (no-see-uhms).
As mentioned in other reviews, this device works in keep mosquitoes away. It is extremely durable and easy to charge and use. It did take 2-3 hours to charge, so plan ahead. This repellant does NOT keep away other flying and biting insects, which in New England are black and green flies in the spring and biting midges (no-see-uhms) in the summer. They will find you, especially your legs, ankles, and feet which means you still have to use some type of topical repellant to be safe. The repellant cartridges for the device are pricey and reviews for the non-branded replacement cartridges do not seem too encouraging, so be prepared to pay premium for mosquito control. In my opinion, it is worth it since it makes sitting in my backyard more tolerable.

Works ok for mosquitoes. Battery is substandard
We like that the product is rechargeable and you donโt have to deal with the propane of the other models. 20 ft radius is about right. Neither is us notice a smell unless you stick it in your nose. As you would expect, Effectiveness diminishes if there is strong wind. Wide stable base. It is new, and 9 hrs seems about right for what we are seeing. 2 cons: the rechargeable versions are more expensive per hour to use because the refills are more expensive per hour than the non rechargeable versions. About 45 cents per hour using the largest and cheapest on Amazon. I think the non- rechargeable are more like mid 30 cents per hour. Second issue, you have to be sure to charge them within a day or two of intended use, or the batteryโs starts to drain if just sitting unused on a shelf. Have not tried to find out by how much, but the unit has 3leds that tell you what level the charge is. If we let it set maybe 3-4 days after giving it a full charge, it may show only two leds, and once it showed only one. Just be forewarned. We sometimes hang ours by the strap right outside the door of our RV if bugs are bad. Does a good job of letting us open the door without any bugs getting in.

WHAT A GREAT SYSTEM, we have three versions...
We've purchased both the Thermacell liquid repellant system and the heat/fuel portable system, and we are huge believers. This rechargeable model is certainly usable as a portable campsite/outdoor concert bring-along, but I use it on the patio, where there's recharging power when needed, and it does an amazing job of keeping mosquitos at bay. I don't know about alternatives, but we are 100% satisfied with the quality and effectiveness of the Thermacell products and refills.

These things really work
The promise: an electronic device that you can turn on to keep mosquitos away. The electronic part is a partial truth, as the electricity is just used as a source of heat, but it's an effective way of keeping mosquitos away. Thermacell devices, electronic or not, work by slowly releasing allethrin, an insect repellent. Low heat is used to make the repellent go into the air. Allethrin is mostly harmless to humans and pets, though it's recommended that you not ingest the repellent or use it near food. There is nearly no smell; the repellent itself is odorless, but the device sometimes releases a bit of smoke. The older fuel-based ones, which either use butane fuel or sit on top of an isobutane fuel canister, use felt mats to hold the repellent; you have to replace the mat after four hours of use. The electronic ones instead use a cartridge loaded with liquid repellent and a wick that slowly releases it; it can provide up to 40 hours of use from a single cartridge. The electric power is simply used to provide heat. Thermacell makes two versions of the electronic device. The more basic one has 6 hours of battery life. This is the upgraded one with a battery that lasts 9 hours, which is enough to keep the device powered for most day events. If you need more run time you can connect it to a USB power bank, or to an AC-powered charger if you're in a location where outlets are available. The cartridges are good for 12 or 40 hours of operation; the bigger ones will cover an entire weekend of camping if you connect it to a large enough power bank to keep it running that long. You have to supply your own charger; the Thermacell does not include one. The company says it will keep a 20 foot area clear. That's true on a reasonably calm day. Winds will carry the repellent away so the effective range is smaller on a windy day. If the winds are REALLY high you won't need to run it because the mosquitos won't be flying. Make sure not to lose or throw away the cap of the repellent cartridge unless you are certain you will use up the rest of its capacity in the current use session. You need to put it back on before you store the cartridge. I recommend keeping the cartridges, new or partially used, in a Zip-Loc bag to make sure you don't end up getting the repellent on other things; the cap is supposed to be enough, but belt and suspenders :)

It works with caveats
I really enjoyed this product and its ability to keep mosquitoes away from me. Just know that it seems to only be mosquitoes, so other small bugs will still be there. That is not a fault, just something to know. Know that, the smoke that comes out of the top as it burns the solution can vary widely on where it disperses and in which direction. So my guess is that the effective area is a moving target that varies widely. Especially if you are in a more windy place where the chemical may be dispersed more quickly and thus results in less efficacy. The battery takes forever to charge. And when I say forever, I mean hours. I have a Anket battery bank. That can run laptops, air pumps, charge multiple cell phones and tablets. And this device takes about as long as that does and has way less capacity. There needs to be an upgrade in the speed with which this charges. And in regards to charging time. There is no indicator how charged it is. All I need is a series of LEDs, which it has, that as they light up indicate how charged the device is. It makes no sense to not have that because I want to know how close I am to getting a full charge and how long it is taking.

Speaking as a mosquito magnet, this works!
I've been using Thermacells on camping trips for three years now. My entire life I've had blood that mosquitos rate "5 stars, would suck again", so when a mosquito repellent works for me, I can definitely tell, and this stuff WORKS! I started with the older rounder style, but switched to the rectangular EX90 a couple years back since it's more compact while providing the same coverage area and battery life. Picked up a second one since I've been at multiple campsites where the fire pit is either more than 20' away from where I've got my cooking area set up, or it's just windy enough that the coverage area is reduced, so I can pop over to one spot and make a cup of tea, then pop over to the fire to drink it, and not get eaten alive at either location. Overall, I'm very satisfied with how well this works - this is a regular use item for me, and I'm happy with how well it works. So don't get me wrong - I love my Thermacell, and I've happily recommended it to others. That being said, I'll take one star off for a couple of shortcomings. First - micro USB to recharge? Seriously? This isn't the early 2000s - it's hard to justify not using USB C for charging. Also, I'd pay a good 50% extra if these things had a simple "hey, there's no cartridge in me, maybe I shouldn't turn on even though my owner's rolled up air mattress is pressing up against my power button" feature. Maybe a little micro switch that's pressed when a cartridge is inserted, or an optical detector that can tell when a cartridge is present, just ANYTHING to keep it from getting accidentally turned on and having its batteries drained in the simple case of "clearly I'm not meant to be running since nobody stuck a cartridge in me". FWIW, my workaround for setting up camp and finding that a stray object has poked my Thermacell's button and drained it dry is to keep a couple of USB recharge banks handy - even if a Thermacell has been accidentally discharged, it'll run (and even recharge) off a Goal Zero or similar battery bank.

Misleading info
It states that a 12 hour refill is included but unfortunately it wasnโt.

This is great, Mozzies and midgies totally gone. Keep the little cap thay screws onto the liquid cartridge as it wilo evaporate when not in use. Otherwise completely excellent, even when its windy.

Questionable
The product worked from the point of view no bites in the 2 hours sat outside but the capsule it came with had barely any liquid and looked like it had leaked and now NO REFILLS on Amazon and massively expensive refills off another site so be warned it works but Will be Expensive to Run if you can get refills.

Have used in patio situation, enclosed 3 side & a roof with zero wind, still getting mozzies after 1, 2 & 3 + hours after starting it more than once
