About one inch or the diameter of a grown mans thumb.

Is the end stainless steel? Trying to use in salt water.

No, it's a anodized metal according to the product description. I'm assuming it is hardened aluminum. Which should be sufficient because you use this to anchor into a soft bottom, such as sand or mud.

Does this pole float?

I don't think so. It is solid. I attached a float to it via a separate line.
