is it necessary to use mylar bags to store rice in or can I simply put rice straight into bucket and seal the lid?

Accepted Answer

Putting them in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers will maximize the shelf life of the rice. Buckets do still have oxygen in them, and allow some light through. The Mylar bags prevents all light, and the oxygen absorbers remove essentially all oxygen that is required for spoilage.

Are the lids reusable?

Yes.  However, they should still be considered as an eventual consumable.  The tear strip locking function is a one time feature.  Here is some info.... Modern bucket lids are typically designed with a tamper proof feature to ensure that the lids do not come off accidentally.  Your lid is equipped with a tear strip.  In typical use, the lid is initially installed with a rubber mallet striking the rim every 4 or so inches around the perimeter.  The lid is now locked onto the bucket.  To remove the lid the first time it is necessary to pull on the tab on the lower edge of the lid.  This tab is the leading end of the tear strip.  When removed all of the way around the lid, each section of the rim will be released to flex allowing the lid to be removed from the bucket.  The lid can then be removed and reinstalled repeatedly.  At this point the lid may behave in the fashion with which you are familiar.  Some folks may elect to remove the tear strip prior to initial use which will make the first installation easier.  Others prefer the tamper evident function to ensure that the bucket is not opened prior to their intended use.  These buckets are used for many purposes from food applications through to industrial applications.  You can imagine the importance of a bucket of paint or honey having a secure lid in transit.  The slots in the rim are the spaces that allow each section of the lid to flex.  Without these slots the lid would we extremely difficult to remove.  Even with the slots, the lids will require some amount of hand strength to operate.  Some folks like to use a bucket wrench or lid lifter such as ASIN B006RXPV4Y.  A study found that 85% of consumers own a 5 gallon bucket suggesting that most of us using industrial buckets will be familiar with the nature of the lid installation, removal, and re-installation.   However, it is worth pointing out that these are rugged industrial grade storage products and not to be confused with kitchenware. The lid and bucket are white plastic and when held up to the light you can see light through it.  Not good if you want no light getting to the contents.
