No, it does not have a velcro strap. I use a small bungee cord to keep it closed although I really don't think it's needed. Great umbrella for the price.

Has anyone had the aqua blue for at least a year, and has it faded?

I have had the aqua blue for over a year. It has faded a bit. But the main “bones” of these umbrellas are good at a decent price. I purchased a beige one a month ago and it has already faded a lot. But you can buy replacement canvas fairly inexpensively as well. Just make sure you know your size and the number of ribs on your umbrella and it takes about 5-10 minutes to swap out the canvas.

how does this hold up in 10-15 mph tradewinds?

Definitely not well constructed enough to withstand 10-15 mph winds. Mine broke within 3 months in 10mph winds.

How dou you open the vent at the top?

Dear, the vent is opened design, so you needn't not to open it by yourself.
