I’ve been sewing for over 20 years but it’s only in the last three years that I’ve started sewing consistently enough that I’m ready to start investing in quality tools. I’ve avoided hand sewing most of that time but have recently started to accept the fact that hand sewing skills are necessary for garment construction if I want the inside of my projects to look as lovely as the outside. I’ve been using random no-brand needles (the assorted packs that come in that plastic wheel thingy) and an assortment of other needles I’ve picked up throughout the years, but I wanted see if using a high quality needle would really make a difference like the experts say they will in all the articles I’ve read. Oh, do they ever! These needles are very fine, with a VERY small eye. So small that no needle threader in existence could possibly fit into it. I was worried that I’d have a hard time threading them but as long as I have enough light I’m able to with a minimal amount of swearing. That small eye is great for sewing fine fabrics, and it really decreases the likelihood that my thread will slip out of the eye while I’m stitching. These needles are also SHARP! Wayyy sharper than any other needle I’ve used. The needle’s sharpness, small eye and thin width all make hand sewing an absolute delight. What a difference! I’ve included a photo comparison to show how Bohin needles compare to the ones I had been using, and you can see how the needle slid through cotton voile like a hot knife through butter. I’m throwing all my other needles away.
