Do All Outdoors Bullet Box Shooting Target, for .22 and .177 Rimfire Cal

I bought this bullet box for shooting .22 caliber pellets in my backyard. I shoot a Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 air gun, which is fairly quiet. Below is how I made my bullet box super quiet, plus ensured the box catches all of the pellets. 1. I made a wooden frame out of 1 x 2 pine to fit inside the bullet box opening. On the back side of the frame, I shaped the top and bottom edges to match the interior of the bullet box. I used four sheet-metal screws on each side to mount the frame. 2. I cut two pieces of exercise mat to fit inside the bullet box on the back and bottom. (I have mat sections left over from flooring my home gym.) Other dense, resilient foam boards will work, but not Styrofoam. 3. I screwed a piece of exercise mat to the wooden frame. This will last a long time, as it is somewhat self-healing, but it is also easily replaced. I also duct taped a piece of exercise mat to the back side of the strike plate for additional sound damping. 4. I left the target that comes with the bullet box inside the plastic wrap, and duct taped it to the front of the box. It doesn’t matter if the center of the target gets shot out, it just makes a good surface to stick splatter targets to. There are several splatter target brands available, but I use Caldwell Orange Peel 5.5” targets (about $0.28 each), and also Pistep 3” splatter targets to cover the centers of the 5.5” targets to extend their life (about $0.08 each). You can also just use the 3” splatter targets by themselves. 5. I set a piece of 2 x 12 on top of an old high stool to hold the bullet box. You need some sort of a backstop for safety. I set my bullet box in front of my throwing axe target. Your backstop should be 1.5” thick lumber at a minimum for stopping lead pellets. The bullet box itself is sturdy and well made, with a 3/16” thick steel strike plate to deflect the pellet or bullet downwards. All ten of the assembly bolt holes lined up. I did not install the hanging rod or the target clip. There was a small gap on the back left corner that a pellet might fall out, so I blocked this with some duct tape. Overall I am very pleased with the product.

Unlike the picture currently posted on Amazon with hex head bolts, the one I received came with allen head bolts and the appropriate size key. Assembly was easy and the box went together fine. There was some slight gap around the back side that COULD allow for some lead spray, but you're going to get far more spray out the front than with the slight gaps in the back. Due to the amount of spray with CCI Mini-Mags, I wouldn't recommend anyone use ANYTHING more powerful than CCI Mini-Mags without modification to the box. I printed targets on regular 8.5x11" paper and they worked great. The box also works well as just a steel gong for distance with a .22. I must say that I'm really impressed with the box overall. Some shots were low and impacted the box on the rounded piece of steel. Even with the Mini-Mags, the metal barely moved. For box longevity, I would suggest regular velocity ammunition, but I suspect it would still take a long time to do any real damage with the high-velocity stuff. Also, DO NOT use this product indoors unless you have the proper air scrubbing/ventilation equivalent. When bullets impact this, they basically vaporize, putting A LOT of lead dust in the air.

First of all, I would give this 4.5 stars if possible. It is built very sturdy. The assembly was simple with the included allen wrench, and the price is right. I cannot comment as to how well it will handle repeated fire from .22lr or .22 wmr. It does say that 100 yards should be the minimum distance for .17 hmr. I, however, have not fired into the trap with anything other than airguns at 38 feet, which is about the farthest shot I can take indoors. The build quality is quite robust, and I'm sure it would shrug off standard velocity .22lr loads at 50 yards from a rifle for a very long time, and probably handle any ammunition from .22lr pistols because of the reduced velocity. I would think that .22 wmr would take a toll after enough rounds, but not having used this trap to stop anything but airguns I really don't know. It certainly stops even my most powerful airgun with zero problem even at very close range. The rifle is an Umarex Octane, and it chronographs at 905 fps at 10 feet from the muzzle with a .22 caliber pellet weighing 14.3 grain pellets. The pellets simply flatten into paper thin fragments and collect in the bottom of the trap. The only reason that I would take off half a star is that there is a small gap at the back of the trap that lets a little of the lead dust created from the impact of the pellets get out of the trap. Not a major deal. I just sweep behind the trap every 500 pellets or so and keep shooting.

Over the years I've made many improvised targets for pellet rifles to use indoors. Spotted this and thought I'd run it through its paces indoors. Using 22lr Calibri ammo ( primer only) in a lever action rifle, all lead was contained ( and quieter than the pellet rifle) 22 pellet pistol worked well, no lead splatter 177 pellet pistol, pointed pellets would ricochete and hit me in the legs. Round or flat pellets would stay contained inside. 177 pellet rifle using rounded pellets, no issues Red Rider bb rifle would have about 1/2 of the Bb's bounce out The first picture shows the projectiles. 22lr, 22 and 177 pellets The second picture shows tiny lead fragments that were on the table from splatter For indoor pellet use, use flat head pellets and it's perfect. For the occasional function check with 22lr firearms indoors, use Calibri bullets with no worries. I rate it a 9 out of 10 for indoor use. For the safety minded, use proper ventilation to control any possible lead exposure indoors. Don't lick your fingers after handling the pellets! UPDATE - Tested at range I took the bullet trap to the range and fired about 100 high velocity hollowpoint 22LR bullets into it at 15 yards. The metal backstop handled it fine, no dents or bends. I did discover that at that close range, there was a bit of lead splatter that exited directly out the front through the target. The splatter particles left holes about the size of a grain of sand. The inside of the trap was completely covered in a gray lead dust powder with lead fragments at the base. When I lifted the stop, there was a heavy grey outline in dust that had leaked through the small gaps where the metal joins together. I would recommend either sealing all the seams with silicone or welding it together. This would retain the bulk of the fragments and dust for reuse in casting bullets.

Heavy duty and works as advertised for high powered pellet rifles. I will not use it for rimfires, but if you are looking for a pellet trap for your 1000 FPS or even higher air rifle this one is perfect. It captures the lead pellets as it should and shows no real wear. No so good for BB guns, as the BBs may come back at you. I have used mine only outdoors, but see no reason it couldn't be used indoors, with proper ventilation. And yes, it works just fine on 350 fps lead pellets fired from pistols. Mine went together with no problems and no cracks or seams. A great product for the money.

This was perfect for me to use not as recommended. I have a couple low power air pistols (250-350fps) that I actually use this with IN MY GARAGE! It works like a charm. My garage isn't big enough for me to get a full ten yards away, but I stand about seven yards back and have never had an issue with anything bouncing out (I shoot .177). For sure, don't use a bb gun with steel bb's...oh good Lord, don't do that! You make that mistake once and the sound of ricochet ensures you never try again. Luckily, I was outside when that happened...just not worth it. However, inside this unit is perfect. Just make sure you are going to hit it or you'll be putting dents/holes in your walls. I don't know what a higher power air rifle (800fps and up) would do in such a closed space...and I don't intend on finding out. The box is incredibly solid, and everything you need to put it together is included in the package. It took me maybe 10 minutes to get it together, mounted, and ready for use.

*Christine's husband reviewing this since it was for me* This is a solid bullet box and works outstandingly well for pelleet rifles. So far I have only chipped some pain where the pellets have struck. I have shot nearly 1000 pellets at this and it is as godo as the day it arrived. For pellet shooters, this should do the trick. It is rated for 22 rimfire, so I hope it would. I would order another if this one was lost. UPDATE 07/02/13 I am still using this as a trap for my 177 and 22 cal air rifles. I have shot thousands of pellets and or BB's into it (careful BB's CAN bounce out). It is holding up well with only some VERY SMALL dents in the back from when I shot the gamo rocket pellets with the BB on the tip. I am still happy with the purchase.

Nice and heavy, and does what it's supposed to do, stop pellets. When putting together, the holes would not line up just right. One side was warped and took some time and strength to line up. After it was all put together, it works well, but does not sit perfectly level, it teeters a bit. Did not want to take it apart to send it back, so we just stuff a piece of cardboard under one corner. Quality control needs to be better on this product.

SOLID. Fire .22 cal all day and no dents or ricochet. Reminds me of how GE fridges used to be made.

I am an avid shooter and a satisfied one but i caution any user to not exceed the recommended caliber it was made for .

This trap is solid thick metal, and good for trapping the .177 and .22 pellets. Assembly is a bit tricky, but doable if you are mechanically inclined. There is one problem with the trap - it's a free standing unit, and you have to make a hanging bracket/s to hang in on the wall/tree/door or whatever. Otherwise it can only sit on something if you want it raised of the ground. To build the bracket it will give you a lot of hard time. It should be sold with the hanging bracket for it. Otherwise good, solid product and works well.

Does the job well. Received one bolt that was still a blank - no thread. No big deal for me in this case. I do wish the top bracket was made from the same or thicker steel as the body of the case. We're learning with a .22 and my son hit the bracket. It survived. I hit the bracket and now it's dead - bent to the point it's not usable. I think I will silicone the inside seams as it does allow particles through the gaps.

Good product, easy to assemble, cheaper than the alternative in Cabelas - if they ever have it in stock.
