Want to use the rice on backpacking, can I pour boiled water into cup, let it sit in an insulated container for 10 minutes & will be okay to eat then?

It says on the package that you can cook these on the stove top: "Cook unopened package in boiling water for 10 min." So you'll probably have better results just using a pot big enough to toss this container into. It's only about 5.5 x 1.5 inches (14 x 3.5 cm).I also agree with the previous answers, that if you add water directly to this rice, it'll probably end up very mushy. Especially after 10 minutes of soaking.Now I've personally never tried the boiling water technique, but I can recommend this Minsley Brand as being the best packaged rice I've found. It comes out of the microwave pretty good, but a rice cooker will always be better. But a rice cooker is nowhere near as convenient for working lunches. Know what I mean? Cheers.

can i take the rice out and move it to a glass container then mircowave the rice. This way we can avoid the plastic and plastic smell.

Yes, we always put it in a glass bowl and microwave it with a little water or sauce. You don't need to cover it with plastic wrap. The healthiest way to heat it up is in a pan on the stove with water or a sauce though.
