When Origami Surprises Us
This is a magnificent table piece! I know how much work goes into a beautiful book like this. "New Expressions in Origami Art" is packed full of pictures that will amaze and surprise. I thought origami was a "tame" art form, but I was mistaken. This book takes origami to the next level. The art, in fact, is so diverse that it is almost difficult to categorize the many artists works. McArthur does the reader a favor by categorizing the art by artist so we can delve into the art that strikes us at the moment.I have no doubt this book will make the art lover in your circle smile and wonder. It is not traditional art, but that's the wonder of it all. Is this really paper? Prove it to yourself and dive in to this wonderful book.

Beautiful, but lack some basic tutorials to entice newbies to this craft/art
A beautiful book as promised and an eye opener to the possibilities of what papers can do and be. However, I was hoping to find some basic information for people with little experience to get started or lured into this paper art, and found almost none - except for one page that shows all possibilities of what 2 simple cuts can make. All in all, a nice coffee table book and a conversation starter.

It's an excellent art book, NOT a how-to book!
It's a wonderful book which highlights the work of different talented origamists, all of which have exhibited in museums and galleries. The chapters are in alphabetical order, each one being dedicated to a different origamist. All the pictures are beautiful and of high-quality (except for one), and they are complemented by the author's critique. At the beginning of the book there's a few thoughts by renown orgamist Robert J. Lang, and a few others by the author: Meher McArthur. It works great as a coffee table book and can be an interesting gift for someone who wants to learn about the origami community and not only about how to fold a couple of origami models. Having said that, let me be clear: it doesn't include any instructions. It's not that kind of origami book! It's an art book which emphasizes in folding as an artistic technique.I felt the book invites the reader to ask about what is art, particularly in the visual arts, and ask as well when is origami a visual art. In regard to that, I wish the book would have concluded with a longer essay about the relations between origami and art. I personally felt something like that was missing. Instead of the essay, the book closes with the spotlight on one more origamist and that's it.One last thing, I had a problem with the shipping of the book. I believe Amazon can take more measures for overseas shipping; mine came with the dust jacket reaped. I did report it and Amazon sent me a new copy and allowed me to keep the first one (I will donate it to a library). Aside from that, the pages of both copies were wavy from humidity, but the waves diminished a bit after being compressed for a couple of weeks between the other books in my bookcase. To sum it up, I'm really happy with my purchase which I got at a very good price!
