Black & White: A High Contrast Book For Newborns

Timeless must-have! I received this book for my oldest when he was born in 2012 and heard raving reviews about how much the gift giver’s own baby had responded to this book. I have now used it for all 5 of my babies and all of them have LOVED it. It’s without a doubt, the only “toy” I have needed for the first couple months. Babies absolutely adore looking at the high contrast images (do a quick Google search on newborn eyesight and development and you will understand why). It is also my go-to shower gift! It’s especially perfect for tummy time, encouraging rolling from back to tummy, and wrapping around their view during diaper changes. It is amazing at calming a baby and keeping their focus and contented interest. The thing that sets this black and white book apart from the others, is the accordion style way it opens, making it perfect for baby to look at, or catch in their line of eyesight, no matter their position (back, tummy, changing time, etc). The other thing that makes it more special is that one side is white with black images and the other is black with white images, so it really keeps baby’s interest and can get changed up. Do not hesitate to buy; It will become a meaningful keepsake and a highly recommended shower gift.

Original (October 2019): This book is awesome. My little guy (8 weeks old) did 20 minutes of Tummy Time straight while looking at this book. He was so interested & engaged. If your questioning purchasing this get it - it was so worth it. We are just going to use this book at Tummy Time. I love that it folds out and then can be stood upright with multiple pictures showing at the same time. One side had white background with black images & the other side if black background with white images. Updated (July 2020): Our little boy is now 10 months old. He absolutely loves this book, he is able to unfold and fold the book back together. He loves looking at both sides & flipping back and forth between the different sides. Just recently it did rip the front cover (but he is really rough with his toys), so I used packing tape to hold it together. Then when this book went on sale bought a new one cause he loves it so much. It's also easy to take places and put in the diaper bag. I highly recommend buying this book (with a backup), totally worth it!

I love that this book folds out! It's perfect to put into baby's crib to give them something to look at while your doing something else. Also a great distraction for the changing table during a diaper change. My 3 month old was absolutely enthralled with the images. Well worth the price if you ask me. I can also see this being very useful as a diaper bag tote along book to help keep baby occupied. Excellent for helping to build better eyesight with the high contrast images. Note this is just a picture book, no words, just images, make up your own story line. You're child will love it!

I got this for my granddaughter and we use it every day! She is a newborn. We lay her down a little fussy and she will stop fussing to look at the images. You can see her tracking them with her eyes. I love that there are two sides. One with black background and one with a white background. She spends quite a bit of time looking at them. We play classical music for maximum brain development time. She was born 6 weeks early so needs some catch up activities. Only thing is I wouldn’t call it a book. It folds out into a long string of images. Perfect for tummy time, as well as all floor time. I highly recommend this!!

Best purchase for newborn! They need tummy time quiet early if you follow the guidelines, and this book is nice for displaying on the baby's side when laying on back (because at first they can't hold their head on the centerline) or in front of them when doing tummy time. The graphics are well-chosen (baby bottle, keys hanging, butterfly, etc...) and you have mostly black pattern on one side, and mostly white pattern on the other. My newborn has made great use of it, even now at 2 months. He liked the mostly white side/pattern the most for some reason. Finally, the book is very sturdy, and has a velcro to close. I would offer it to a friend if I could!

This simple book offers high-contrast images of everyday objects. It is intended for young infants and is appropriate even for a newborn. This book opens up accordion-style. It will stand up by itself to entertain a baby who is lying down. Because of the layout, it is a bit awkward for reading to a baby who is seated in your lap. The book has a small velcro closure to prevent it from unfolding itself in your diaper bag or toy bin. It is made of thick, glossy cardboard, which makes it easy to wipe off spills.

I was told that the black and white books by Tana Hoban were good. And, after purchasing Black & White, I agree. In this book, eight pictures are shown in white with a black background. There's a baby bottle, a balloon, a chair, buttons, a bird, a flower, a banana and a sailboat. The book folds out, making it great for tummy time, and the objects shown are simple ones that a baby is sure to see (in color) around him. On the opposite side of the above pictures, when folded out, six more are shown in black with a white background. There's a fork and spoon, a baby bib, a butterfly, a leaf, keys and a cat. I own three black and white books. And, while I think Baby Animals Black and White: Black and White by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes is the best, I'm glad I bought Hoban's Black & White.

It’s super lightweight and easy to use! my son seems to love it and I would stare at it for a long time and he seems to enjoy looking at the black-and-white pictures! It’s also very affordable, so I recommend it!

Had it for my kids, and got it for a baby friend

Lo que esperaba, y me encanta por tener tantas paginas/imágenes para contar historias a tu peque en cualquier idioma! Calidad del cartón es súper y muy agradable para tanto ni que bebé quien hoy a La 1ra lectura ya le atraiga la atención. Un dibujo cambiando página blanco sobre negro o negro sobre blanco. He pedido tb el libro acordeón pero prefiero este formato y el hecho que hayas más dibujos. (Añadiré mi reseña allí del otro). Este es más grande y de verdad se aguanta muy bien al suelo para bebé si este boca abajo o boca arriba. Mejor calidad-precio este modelo en mi opinión. Este libro completa otros libros blancos negros que me han encantado, pero tener uno de ese estilo con images es sólo vale la pena. Lo recomiendo si o si!

This book is so good for tummy time, my baby loves it and has been using it since 2 weeks old. Keeps him entertained and he loves the butterfly. Great for stimulating and love the fact it stands with all the images open so the baby can exercise his neck looking both ways. Worth buying
