yes a finish nail with a head diameter that fits in the tube. Half inch board is no sweat.

Q: Would it be possible to shorten the rod for use on thinner wood?

I don't see why not. Cut it, grind it or if you have a lathe, machine it down. Get a spare plunger in case you mess it up!

Q: Can this work from the head end to remove previous deck nails?

No. The far end of the nail needs to be expelled into open space, like a trash can or your yard. :-)
