Are the cocoons real ?

Yes indeed. They are cut where the moth came out. I degummed a bunch of them and stretched them into mawata and spun yarn from them. Great fun.

How are these made? Are the silk worms killed?

When my kids were young, we raised silkworms for fun. When they are ready to emerge from their cocoons, they squirt out a liquid that softens the silk at one end of the cocoon and they push their way out. That leaves a cocoon that can't be used for making silk (silk production requires killing the pupa before it emerges as a moth, otherwise the silk strand is broken.) So this is a good way to use the cocoons from the moths that were allowed to live. Woo hoo! (BTW, the moths are very cute. The silkworms, not so much.)

How often do you use them?

I use the about 3 times a week.

Can you soak a number of these in advance to prepare them for future use, or do you always have to soak each one for 20 mins right before each use?

You’d soak it right before use, not more than a day in advance. I soak in very hot water to speed the absorption process.
