Pediatric Critical Care: Text and Study Guide

Up to date, with excellent figures and diagrams. Enjoyable to read!

This was advertised as the full second edition. Instead, I received only part 2 of the study guide. Additionally, this book arrived to me damaged.

New science.

The volume has ballooned out to about 1600 pages and now serves poorly for almost all functions you might use it. Not efficient as a board study guide. Not useful as a quick reference on the unit where Up-to-Date is superior and better referenced. Not as durable as the standard texts. And we know that students/fellows don't learn best by reading massive texts, so not a good tool for trainees. And let's be honest, the vast majority of the material is not needed to provide excellent high quality ICU care. What the field needs are tools to help ICU docs master fundamentals and clinical care. We now have strong evidence that adult humans learn best through active recall, not by reading texts so I'd like to see SCCM release the tools to facilitate this process: a well referenced question bank of 2500-5000 questions with extensive explanations; a flash card deck of around 3000-5000 core flash cards. SCCM should certainly be able to get 99.9% of essential masters level information on this quantity of material and it would serve the community much better than another 1600 page text in the digital age. Wish someone would get adult learning right.
