Those that knew there facts were given this set (division) to play, which made them more confident with division (they finally figured out how multiplication and division relate). I now own several sets of math war (multiplication, division, and addition/ subtraction). Parents: PLEASE buy these for you kids, you will not regret it. They figure out that math can be fun and master facts a lot quicker! Division would be great for third grade up. Very easy, fun, and non-intimidating way to learn facts (even if they need a multiplication table or paper at first). Also a great summer activity and travel game! Parent please play these games- you won't regret it!
After teaching a couple of my third graders to play the multiplication version (they had never played war), everyone was begging daily to play! Many struggled with their multiplication facts in the beginning (and throughout the whole year), but after playing these games several times they quickly learned them. Those that knew there facts were given this set (division) to play, which made them more confident with division (they finally figured out how multiplication and division relate). We have all four sets and "play" at least one per day. My oldest is 13!
these are very sturdy and durable cards. A wee bit big for little hands but not for adults. I bet my kids $100 for each set of cards that I could beat them in this war. My son beat me fair and square in addition and subtraction years ago and just beat me 37-44 in division. He's very quick on the division identity and (n divided by 1) and numbers divided by themselves (equals 1) and beats me almost every time with those. Not sure why he's faster than me on those but if you offer this challenge, exclude these cards from the multiplication and division deck up front if you're like me and want a fighting chance. Regardless, it's been very motivational for him and money well spent. And if you're wondering, yes, I can still smoke him at multiplication. :-) The amount of games you can make up with these cards is limitless and can vary for any age. At a younger ages we divided the deck and then each placed a card in the middle. The one with the higher value got to keep the card. No rush and lots of support from parents. The one with the most cards at the end wins. Works for every deck. The big takeaway is this is a fun way to reinforce basic math skills. We've done it for 15 minutes a day for years and I'll put $100 bucks on my kids if you're up for the challenge. Zoom anyone? :-P And this is great for in the car, too. They played each other every day for a few years while commuting to the same school.
