How many lbs of sand is recommended to fill?

A 25 lb bag should do it . It’s a great toy. You can use the play sand that comes in colors and can be used indoors as well.

I see there is a gap at the top of the ramp, when cover is flipped on. How does sandbox prevent water, insects & worms from getting through gap?

When the lid is on the sandbox, the lid will keep out most of the water although some water may still get inside as it is not waterproof.

Does the sand contain silica?

The sand is purchased separately and is not included with the sandbox.
