Does the surface need to be flat? Our couch has some tufting/buttons so the surface has some dimples.

Flat helps but works on uneven surfaces as well like a pillow or jeans while wearing them not perfect like that but the best I’ve ever found! *****😊

Can you use this on clothing?

Yes it can wirk on clothes. I use mine on couch, pillows, comforter. It is amazing!!! Only thing that truly works on pet hair!!!
