Expected the songs to be directed at a beginning beginner
My 9 year old son just began lessons a few weeks ago with the Thompson series. He expressed that it would be more fun to play songs he recognized rather than what is presented in "Teaching Little Fingers to Play." I like the song selection, but the book is a little too difficult for him. I expected the lessons to be at the same level as the ones at the beginning of "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" and that we would use it as a replacement. This book is more of a supplement for performance rather than learning. I don't regret the purchase, I will just have to put off using it until he's at the skill level this book requires.

I do like it, but it wasn't exactly what I was ...
I had not looked at this series prior to purchasing. I do like it, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The collection of songs is nice. It includes a little story or explanation with each song which is interesting. The arrangements are good for an early beginner. The thing I don't like is that its only right hand for the "child's part", then each song has a complex 2 handed accompaniament that goes with it. So although you can recognize the melody in the child's part, it is a little empty to play alone.

Every Young Student Should Learn These Songs
I use this for every student. Otherwise they won't learn this melodies or their history. The origin of each song is a great history lesson. And with the duet parts, students get their most important lesson - playing at rhythm.

great for beginners!
My children only had 5 formal piano lessons before summer interrupted them. We got this book and they were able to play a couple of the songs right away (slowly). It introduced songs that became gradually more difficult and incorporated some new notes that they had not yet played. I love that it also teaches them not only to play patriotic songs, but the words that accompany them. Excellent beginner's piano book.

good selection for early beginners
I love John Thompsons "Little Fingers" series and this is another great installment. Unfortunatley, there are few little kids who are interested in learning America's Patriotic songs nowadays, so it isn't very appealing to a young audience.

The songs are fun, too
My daughter loves this book. She is just starting to play and loves that she can learn familiar songs quickly. The songs are fun, too.
