Question 1

Does the bowden tube still pass through this, or just the filament? Not sure if this is a work-around instead of replacing with an all metal  hot end

It's basically a all metal hot end with this replacement, If all you do is PLA it's a waste of money. PLA sticks to much even with the cooking oil remedy. I only print with PLA so I took it off my machine and went back to the Bowden tube hotend.

Question 2

Is this supposed to mount flush to the heat block or leave the unthreaded part above?  When I threaded it in it seems to be to loose unless flush.

Accepted Answer

The threaded part should not be driven in flush.  The necked portion helps reduce heat flow into the copper part.  Mounting the copper part flush with the heat block defeats this purpose.

When assembling, first mount the hot end nozzle all the way into the heat block and then unscrew about 1/2 turn for adjustment hot.  Then screw this heat break into the heat block until it buts up against the nozzle, but do not let the nozzle turn.

The necked portion of the heat break should be visible after assembly and the copper portion should not be against the heat block.

Now assemble this to your hot end heat sink.  Assemble all components and get the hot end to operating temp (~200C).  Holding the heatblock with pliers (or similar) tighten the hot end nozzle finally until snug (about 1/4 of a turn).  Let assembly cool until normal use.

The hot end assembly should now be ready for use and should not leak or jam with normal use.

Regular setting. Only thing this does is allows you to print materials that need hotter temps without cooking your bowden tube
